I spent about an hour last night watching youtube videos of flint knapping.

I watches this fellow, will lord, spend 40 minutes working on a Danish dagger, then it broke..., darn.

I need some flint and antler....

it looks like something I would be good at.....

I wonder if there is a market for such things.....

no rocks around here..., except in my head. I have a few pounding/grinding stones, and a large perfectly balanced stone that appears to be a large maul for driving wooden stakes, that would have had a haft attached to it, that I have found locally. and one rock that is exactly what he used for a hammer stone/abrasive stone.

There is sort of a market for these things , you can make imitation points and probably flint knives and sell them at craft shows ,I would imagine obsidian would make a better point or knife then flint ,a lot of the flint I find isnt very hard ,you need something that fractures correctly and has some toughness .Chalk deposits are said to have good flint inclusions .

I have seen some awesome local collections of local native stonework

the variety of points and stone types was wide. some of them were obviously ceremonial as they were so beautiful.

I remember one point in particular that was almost transparent.

I don t remember if it was knapped or ground.....

Knapping flint is part of the heritage of my people. I would like it to be taught to some extent in the school that my kids attend. True being able produce a stone point would have no practical value these days, but it would be away to celebrating the heritage of our people, our roots, and demonstrate to my people where they come from and the fact there is no limit to where they can go.

Perhaps your family only goes back three or four generations, but mine goes back tens of thousands of years. Hell, I am even proud of my Neanderthal ancestors.

all of our ancestors knapped flint. all of our ancestors date back to the beginning of humanity, where ever and what ever that was.

and the Africans without Neanderthal DNA have other DNA s, such as the type that the bushmen of the kalihari carry in higher percentages than others.

What twaddle! All of human ancestry goes back to the same roots - people who bashed rocks into useful shapes and crapped on the ground. There's not one possible reason for "pride" in any of that common experience that is so remote as to make a claim of "heritage" nothing but meaningless drivel. Your family goes back tens of thousands of years... what a baseless claim (other than the above).

I m trying to talk about pretty rocks over here.....

I like rocks. sometimes I watch the jewely channel sometimes just to see the pretty rocks. only if they are showing natural stones tho, not synthetic crap.

holly caught me watching the jewelry channel a couple of years ago and was like..., "what are you doing"?

I had to explain that I liked to look at the pretty rocks....

strangely enough that seemed to make sense to her......

I don t watch it often, but it the girls think it s funny when they catch me lingering on the pretty rocks....

I thought you wanted to keep this thread about pretty rocks otherwise I would happy to tell you about the continent of Eurasia and the uniqueness of the Eurasian steppes.

liberty, I believe Moore is originally from Flint, MI; remember, he made his reputation on "Roger and Me", the documentary about the decline of Flint when GM pulled out — and 'knapping' (without the 'k') refers to sleeping.
