Why does all the news require hyperbole?

Back when I was working I would stop at a Starbucks at 6am for a cup of house blend. Same barista would serve me nearly every morning. Frequently she would say, "My mother always said, 'Little boys who are liars, grow up to be weather men' ".

My favorite online weather service (Weather Underground) gives me a fairly good local report. Right now it is headlined "Possible Biggest Storm Of The Season Arrives" I added up their own numbers for the next ten days. I am to get a total of 2.76 inches, all of it in rain, spread out over ten days. The largest on any one day is expected to be 0.46 inches. Maybe be the season they mean is 'early spring.'
