My internet connection speed is Retarded

At 8:05 am today I decided to upgrade my iMac to the latest OS - "Mountain Lion" - which requires an internet download. It is currently 10:15 am and the download is slightly less than 1/3 completed.
That's just the download! How long will the installation take?
In the meantime I've reported my slow internet connection speed to AT&T. I'm only getting 1mps download speed and should be getting close to 3mps.
I'm having a bad geek day.

Fibre Optic - I have been lusting after it for years when we moved back to Wales it was the #1 thing on my "must have" list I actually only expected to have a 40Mbps connection but through pure chance we're very close to the cabinet so I had 56Mbps from day one and once the line had settled down its been between 65 - 75 most days. I also paid extra for an unlimited data allowance and then upgraded my pc to make the most of it lol

If I had less than 10% of that speed I'd be happy.
And I would probably need to pay quite a bit for that.

It's not cheap but I don't think it's that expensive either I pay £26 a month (42.05 US dollars 39.80 Australian dollars) for the unlimited internet up to 76Mbps and they are due to upgrade my cabinet in the new year to the 160Mbps connection if I switch to that it'll cost me £35 a month, at the moment I'm not considering switching simply because I get very decent speeds already. On top of my broadband I also pay £10.75 a month line rental and roughly £4 a month for free anytime calls (all UK landline phone calls regardless of distance are free for up to 59 mins duration, so you just hang up and redial if you are still talking after 59 mins) theres a few other extras I add on top like call barring, call waiting, discounted international calls etc but just for the bare phone line, calls & internet is around £40 a month (just over $65 US or $60 Aus).

I pay about $32.00 per month for "up to 3Mbps".
I guess I will need to leave this country for a better deal.

You know if anyone else using AT&T having a problem? That's what I'm on.

I kind of remember reading a while back reading that ATT lowered people's connection speed in some areas without telling customers but I don't remember the details.
I don't download a lot so I didn't follow up on it.

In my area (Antioch) AT&T has switched over to fiber optic cable. That is what I'm on right at this moment.
The sent me some hardware in the mail.
Perhaps where you live, they haven't changed over yet from phone lines to fiber optic?
I wanted the cheapest price which is around $20/mo for 3 Mbs/sec.

Thanks, dale.

We pay $180Au a quarter for 150 gig download limit. (that's $15Au a week = 9.77 quid or $15.80 US.)
You don't live in a laboratory, so it's quite true that the various factors listed above will reduce your performance from the 'ideal' shown in the above graph.
Hence, in December 2006 we took a random sample 7,305 Internode ADSL2+ broadband services, each connected to an Agile DSLAM and using the ADSL2+ protocol (G992.5 Annex A ADSL2+ over POTS). We found the following distribution:
13.4% achieve a download synch speed of higher than 20 Mbps
27.7% achieve a download synch speed of between 15 Mbps and 20 Mbps
22.1% achieve a download synch speed of between 10 Mbps and 15 Mbps
23.0% achieve a download synch speed of between 5 Mbps and 10 Mbps
13.8% achieve a download synch speed of less than 5 Mbps

That looks like it's more than I pay but...
As far as I know I have no limit on what I can download but to download 150 gig would probably take me more than 3 months.

I haveto spend approximately R395 to obtain 2Gb of data using a cell phone chip in a modem keyed to MTN (one of the cell phone service providers). That's US$50-55. I buy R540 airtime at a supermarket; take my cell phone chip out; put the internet chip into my cell phone; load the R540; purchase 2Gb of; send the excess airtime to my real cell phone chip; then take the internet chip back out of the cell phone and stick it in the little modem.
2Gb generally lasts around a month - but I can't watch too many videos or download too much stuff - Skype is not possible. Speed is measured in kps and it's bloody slow, depending on whether I'm downtown (quicker) or out in the sticks. Which suits me because if it ran faster my data time would expire quicker . . . er. . .
I wish I could have a monthly contract for unlimited time for X dollars. But as a non-resident (technically I can only be on a visitor visa, albet valid for three years at a crack) I can't get a contract.

You have a visa good for three years, but can't get even a one year contract?
I take it math is not a big priority in the SA education system...
