You've been a very naughty boy haven't you?

Got the fatty liver thing going on?

Gee thanks, you're a source of inspiration
I'll make some mega lifestyle changes after Xmas/New Year/me birthday. I'll have it all fixed by my next blood test in April....

Strop old son,
Take care or you will end up like me and that is definately not a good thing.
My doctor says I am living on borrowed time. I just hope who ever I borrowed it from doesn't find out and want it back.

I expect to go straight to hell...........at least I won't have to spend time making new friends.
Re: Cholesterol
Heh, thanks Miles.
I don't have any options though, I've told "she who must be obeyed" and she's getting all strict with me (and I love it!).
I'll be having a normal, well normal for us, Xmas/New Year/Birthday, then I'm under orders....
If you know anyone with any spare time going though, I'll happily take it...

Re: Cholesterol
What is 3mmol/L in American English doctorismic cholesteration terminology?
Must be total, but if not, what's the HDL to LDL ratio?
I'm too lazy & busy to go googling.

Re: Cholesterol
You're a vegetarian, right?
How are you consuming too much cholesterol if you're on a vegetarian diet? Butter? Cheese? Eggs? Butter is easy to limit. Cheese has such a strong flavor that you can eat it with slices of fruit to regulate the amount, or add a tiny bit of cut-comb honey or walnuts*.
There isn't good data on human supplementation, but resveratrol looks promising. As a chemist who has to often worry about solubility the shape of the molecule looks like a good candidate to keep cholesterol in solution, not attaching itself to the walls of your arteries.
The basic idea is to have a molecule which is partially 'like' the thing you're trying to solubilize and partially 'like' the solvent.

Resveratrol
The rigid planar ring structures (aromatic) could coordinate with the rigid planar cholesterol molecule and the hydroxyls will help solubility in aqueous.

Cholesterol
The problem with cholesterol is that its not really very soluble and does not like being a liquid. Things which are liquids are generally flexible, like the alkyl 'tail' on cholesterol. Things which are vary small and rigid (benzene and toluene) are liquids but as things get only a tiny bit larger they are solids, anthracene, phenanthrene, napthalene &c. and not very soluble either. Now you can 'trick' a molecule into being soluble by adding a flexible 'tail' to it. I've derivatized anthracene that way and you can follow the reaction by seeing the (mostly insoluble) solid disappear into solution and give it a yellow color. But in this case the tail is small and alkyl (non-polar, not very soluble in water) and the rigid bit is large so it tends to crash out and make plaques, which are the real problem.
I'm leaving out the initiation of plaque formation since at your age its too late to do anything about it. (mine too) But it begins with an inflammatory process which disrupts the smooth and non-wettable lining of your arteries and creates a spot where things can attach.

* I think walnuts are supposed to be good for heart disease based on the nurse's cohort data.

Re: Cholesterol
I don't recommend resveratrol because there isn't enough data to prove its worth but I take it myself because the probability seems reasonable and if I wait for the data 10 years will have passed when it might have done some arterioprotective good. 500 mg per day (at the low end of what might be useful).
And the cost (to me) is nominal. If our budget were tighter the marginal value of the extra $30 month would be greater and I would not use it.
So it's just a thought, not a recommendation. Other than this I take a multi-vitamin and that's it.

Re: Cholesterol
Sometimes it just comes down to your genes. My Hindu vegetarian buddy tells me that high cholesterol is common amongst your fellow vegetarians. Do yourself a favor and go see a dietitian. They will guide you and make figuring things out much easier. If all else fails, and sometimes it does, talk to the Doc about taking a pill to get it down.
Re: Cholesterol
Has your GP offered you a gene test for familial hypercholestemia?
Cookie has inherited this condition from his mum, regardless of how much he reduces his fat intake his cholesterol is always abnormally high and is permanently on a hgh dose statin to counter it.

It's cheese. It's cheese. The man is made from cheese.
He goes through 95% of this households cheese supply.
Cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese, cheese.

Which is why it might be a good idea to ask for the test, right?Gob wrote:Genes are a bit of tricky one, what with me being adopted....
Re: Cholesterol
Yep, but I'll go down the diet and exercise road first, see if I can hammer it out of me.

Get some bacon down you mate... it's your only hope!
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
