http://www.cnn.com/2013/12/19/world/eur ... -collapse/London (CNN) -- A rescue operation was under way Thursday after part of the ceiling in the Apollo Theatre in central London collapsed during a performance, trapping people inside and causing casualties, Metropolitan Police said.
Authorities responded to a report of a ceiling collapse at about 8:15 p.m., police said in a tweet, adding, "We are aware of a number of casualties but we have no further detail at this early stage."
The Press Association said witnesses saw people emerging from the building covered in dust.
Fire trucks arrived at the theater, which is located next to Picadilly Circus in the heart of the city, though there was no indication of fire.
Paramedics arrived carrying stretchers as police cordoned off the area.
The theater's website said "The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time" had been playing," which it described as "a thrilling new stage play from the National Theatre."
Ticket prices at the theater, which opened its doors in 1901 and whose 775 seats are arrayed on four levels, included a 1 pound "theatre restoration levy," the website said.

More from the Beeb;
Some 88 people are injured, at least seven seriously, after part of a roof in London's Apollo Theatre collapsed during a show, police have said.
The venue in Shaftesbury Avenue was packed for a performance of the Curious Incident Of The Dog in the Night-time.
An eyewitness heard "a crackling" noise before the collapse at about 20:15 GMT. Theatre-goers left covered in debris.
London Ambulance said there were some 76 walking wounded and all those who were trapped had been freed.
London Fire Brigade said eight fire engines were attending, and police are also at the scene in London's busy West End theatre district.
The ornate plasterwork ceiling collapsed and brought part of the lighting rig down, it added.
A spokesman said the theatre was almost full with 720 people watching the performance.
The Met Police said more than 40 walking wounded were being treated at the nearby Gielgud Theatre, while a London bus used to transport others injured to hospital.
There were no reports of fatalities.
