Advanced motorcycle training...

Post by Jarlaxle »

Just did my first track day. It will not be my last.

Dude did something different this year: a "non-sportbike" track day. Had the only scoot there...had fun. There were all sorts of bikes...couple dual-sports, two old (80's) BMW boxers, a bunch of Harleys, at least two full-dress Goldwings, about a dozen Kawasaki Concours 1400's, a BMW R1200GS, several Honda Shadows, two V-star 650's (incredibly, both white with tan seats and saddlebags), an 1800 Indian, several Victorys, three Triumphs, and a Suzuki Gladius with neon-pink wheels and chain.

Lots of fun, learned a lot. Not surprisingly, the Burg was WAY underpowered compared to all the others...a couple times, an instructor signaled me to pass him/her, and I flat-out COULDN'T, I just didn't have the power...first time I wished (at least a little) that I had a 650. Discovered that rolling on power from ~35MPH, Liz's Hyosung Comet will leave me behind. Also discovered that at high speed, hers really DOES sound like a wound-out dirt bike.

Then I loaded the Burg into my Dakota, and discovered I was really happy I didn't have another 100lbs of bike to wrestle. (And note to self, need a second ramp.)

This one was Thompson, CT....next one may be there, might be Loudon, New Hampshire, Zimmerman, NY (upstate), or (opening next year) Palmer, MA.

Next nonsportbike day won't be until next year, though.

foot brake pedal and front brake master cyclinder are minimum needed to ride. After that a new gas tank and some bending of things. Gas tank is dented on both sides but not punctured. Good thing is a comes in black so I don't have to paint it.
My insurance gave me $1500 (appreased damage at $2k but had $500 deductable). Theya are going after the other guy for thier payout and my other $500. Been a little lazy on ordering the parts and fixing it up.

I hope to ride to work 4 days this week. :) (Took my Caddy today...90 degrees, no A/C in my work truck...I'm not up for riding after 9+ hours of that.)

I usually don't ride the mc to work. (certainly not this summer). It's 45min-hour ride and on the LIE. Not exaclty mc freindly. I like to sit back and have a cup of coffee and a cigarette (and fully wake up) while driving to work.

Parts are finally on order. But I won't be riding til the spring. I don't ride when the leaves are falling. My worst spill was on wet leaves. Never again.

ETA
Dad hinted he's giving me his bike next season. I'm thinking of leaving at the lake house in Pa. so I can ride it when I go up there.
maybe I'll bring it down once in a while in season.

More fun to RIDE to the lake house, no? :D

Assuming she gets the PC she's looking at, Liz and I are considering running either the Blue Ridge or the Dragon next year.

It's nice once one gets up past westchester. LI and Queens and Bronx sucks dead dogs (and is pretty dangerous).

The only way to avoid the city is to go east and hop on a ferry either at Port Jefferson or Orient point. And now that I think of it, taking the port Jeff ferry to Conn might be a fun ride. Something to look at next year.

You guys ride safe.
