April Showers

Post by BoSoxGal »

I'm taking the month of April off from the interwebs.

Sadly, I can't do the full Monty because I'm required to use email, twitter, Facebook at work (I'm responsible for social media) and to conduct research online and use Google Docs for creation of documents, etc.

So I'm not going totally Luddite.

But, I will be checking my cell phone once a day for phone messages and otherwise no games, no Facebook, no Plan B Forum  no reading just one more page online that turns into hours/day.

My bookshelves arrive Friday, I'm collecting my books from the storage unit Saturday and will be reading, reading, reading - like I used to back in the pre-interwebs days.

I'm not giving up videos entirely, but I'd like to limit it to an hour/day/most, so that's the goal.

I will miss you all, wish me luck though - part of my journey to reconnect with my spirit! :ok :D

Turn on, tune in, drop out. Best of luck on your hiatus.

Enjoy!

And keep a reading list; I'm always looking for a new book or twelve.

When did she say she was going walkabout?  The entire month of April.
All Fools Day isn't until Friday.  You're rushing it a little, BSG.
(and if you really are going AWOL for a month, should we even bother responding to anything of yours until we see that you are safely back?)

Seriously, thought, congrats on deciding to actually read books the old-school way instead of just loading up the tablet or the Kindle and binging on them in that manner. There's nothing like the sensation of holding the printed word in one's hand, the weight of the binding, the tactile feel of actually turning the pages, and that unique scent that all old books seem to accumulate over time; and if it's an especially older used book, it's also an interesting mental exercise to let your mind wander as to who else might have held this same volume in their hands at some time or another.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Or where . . . sometimes with library books I'd get creeped out thinking somebody else pooped holding the book and maybe didn't wash their hands either! And then there's the stains on the pages that I try sorting out - is that Cheeto grease? Or orange crayon smudge?

The free library here has been open continuously since 1887 and is one of the best libraries I've ever seen in a smaller city. The collection is great, they have a massive interlibrary loan program to get books from all over the country, and they have regular educational and arts programming. I might volunteer if they need me.

I know it's normal to wax more and more nostalgic as one gets older, but I have really been longing for the lower tech days recently. I think that means I'm digitally dependent. So no it's not an April fools which is why I posted early but I also know I might be very tempted to cheat cuz you guys are so funny and who knows what might happen in April that I'll feel requires that I view your opinions - so just for the record I reserve the right to cheat and this is not like an all dramatic "I'm leaving and I'll never be back!" sort of thread because you know I'm more enlightened now and would never say never again.

Good for you BSG. Take some time away from the digital diversions. Not watching TV is not very hard, I do it all the time. Anyway, see you when I see you.
read books the old-school way
It's the only way I read books.

Oddly I've just had to (almost) give up reading books - went through 15 in the past 10 days and realise it's getting a bit much. See ya BSG! Good luck with the withdrawal!
