People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

the problem is, where do we draw that line? OK, smoking is something with data behind it, but what about parents with overweight children (and how overweight should they have to be before the state steps in)? What about parents who let their older children drink a glass of wine with dinner, maybe on holidays? there are a lot of cultural practices in our multicultural society that are bound to stepped on if we let the government make the decision what constitutes a threat to the wellbeing of a child and extend it to benign (or at least not immediate) threats.Don’t have kids if too selfish to prioritize their wellbeing - if that became the universal rule, human society would be 100% healthier both physically and psychologically.
When I was 7 (and probably well before that) I used to drink coffee with breakfast (a lot of Scandinavian kids did)--it was really more milk and sugar than coffee. When I mentioned that in school, my teacher called my mother in and told her kids shouldn't have coffee, it "stunted their growth", a common belief at the time. Imagine if she had to contact DYFS or Family Services and start an investigation.
I know you have been involved with child welfare, as I have, and have seen the severe shortage of resources. Imagine the resources that would be needed to investigate the coffee drinking kids, or fat kids, etc. (or the resources that would be taken away from kids at risk of immediate harm). Once you open the door to government intervention without an immediate harm risk, this is where it will inevitably lead unless strict limits are given, but what limits should be applied?
