Did anyone notice the TV and newspaper PSAs that finally ran after years of appeals of the Big Tobacco settlements? The TV ads were silent, and consisted only of printed words on the screen accessible only to literate Americans who were paying attention enough to notice and read the text of the 30 second ads, and after much legal wrangling the Big Tobacco manufacturers were able to weasel out of any additional messages distributed via social media or elsewhere online where most Americans now get their news.

The PSAs, of course, are an admission that cigarette smoking is deadly and that Big Tobacco admits manipulating nicotine to addict and keep addicted millions of Americans. Mea culpa, indeed - entirely minus the contrition.

Is that any better or worse than the half truths or misapplied facts put out by the “Truth” campaign?

I swear it took me a long time to kill the urge to smoke out of spite after seeing thier ads. So much so that I’ve wondered if they are counterproductive.

Far worse, I’d say. I can’t really see the comparison, to be honest.

eta: Here’s an article about the ads I’m referring to: https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.nbcnew ... ncna823136

The Truth campaign is largely lauded by government and health officials, FWIW - and teen (the target audience) smoking is at a record low of only 6%. As someone who wishes she’d not picked up her first ciggie as a teen subject to peer pressure from smoking pals, I’d have lauded whatever positive anti-smoking propaganda had been targeted at me, and just wish there had been some - even if it included some hyperbole, because whatever gets dumb kids to preserve their lung and heart health seems worth it.

I think I have seen the 'PSA' you are posting about. On the tv stations here, there is a voice speaking the words that appear on the screen. Tobacco companies are identified by name, and the text basically says "Some judge has ordered us to tell you this. We lied. We knew it was much worse than we claimed."

I have an idea for an SNL skit...

A group therapy session with Leroy Jethro Gibbs, Ray Donovan, and Walt Longmire, where they're all supposed to "open up" and share their feelings...

Quietest...therapy session...ever....

That would be funny!

Reaching back a bit, we could also add Andy Sipowicz.

Might also be a good starting list for having your back in a barroom brawl. At the other end of the bar, you might start with Hawkeye Pierce, Meathead (All in the Family), and Larry Sanders (or Larry David, although neither is in touch with their feelings, they would not shut up in a therapy session).

After years being addicted to crime dramas, here's my question: why is it that during the police/suspect foot chase, none of the good citizens takes it upon themselves to trip or tackle the suspect for the benefit of law & order?!?! I TOTALLY would! If ever there is a time to effect a citizen's arrest, surely it's when the cops are running after a bad guy yelling 'stop! police!' - yet in all these shows and movies, the sheeple get bumped and knocked down or just stand there staring like stupid bovines.

Doh! :loon

And how do older, out of shape cops in dress shoes catch the young, fit guy running in track shoes?

My guess is because how it really happens wouldn't be as exciting.

Many triathletes and runners wish for an opportunity to chase down a crook who is fleeing from the law, but for Chad Welford this became a reality last week. Welford is the Circuit Clerk in Lucedale, Mississippi and he was at the right place when it mattered. John Samuel Bond who apparently got permission from the judge to kiss his wife before being taken into custody, used the opportunity to flee the courtroom. And then came Chad.

* * *
I would guess it took me about 1 minute to catch up to him, and then I followed him for about 2 more minutes before he “ran out of gas” and tried to hide in the shrubs. I was wearing a suit and tie. It was extremely hot with high humidity. His first words were “I can’t breathe. I’m going to throw up”. Once he was in custody I walked back to court and continued with my normal duties.

:ok

I can easily see him doing that (even in a suit and tie), but TV cops? No way.

But let's not forget, the mummy always caught up with the people fleeing him, and he walked slowly with a limp (really dragging one leg), so outlasting them must be the way it is done.

and to hijack the thread, look at the flag behind Chad. In a courtroom no less.

It’s the state flag of Mississippi.
