Election 2020
Re: Election 2020
I read those polls as saying a solid majority are happy with what they have; that is a consensus and logically translates into a consensus to not do anything to substantially change their coverage. What there is not a consensus on is whether to do anything more about those who are not in the majority, i.e., those who either do not have coverage or do not like the coverage they have.

Re: Election 2020
I always liked George Bernard Shaw's take on the word 'ghoti' which he said was the correct spelling of what the rest of us know as 'fish.'
'gh' as in rough
'o' as in women
'ti' as in nation.
(I just looked it up to get the Wiki link and to my surprise it is often misattributed to Shaw and in fact predates him by decades. I like learning stuff I didn't know. I've probably 'known' this to be Shaw for at least fifty years.)

Re: Election 2020
Dearest creature in creation, study English pronunciation.
I will teach you in my verse sounds like corpse, corps, horse, and worse.
I will keep you, Suzy, busy, make your head with heat grow dizzy.
Tear in eye, your dress will tear. So shall I! Oh, hear my prayer.
Just compare heart, beard, and heard, dies and diet, lord and word,
Sword and sward, retain and Britain. (Mind the latter, how it’s written.)
Now I surely will not plague you with such words as plaque and ague.
But be careful how you speak: say break and steak, but bleak and streak;
Cloven, oven, how and low, script, receipt, show, poem, and toe.
Hear me say, devoid of trickery, daughter, laughter, and Terpsichore,
Typhoid, measles, topsails, aisles, exiles, similes, and reviles;
Scholar, vicar, and cigar, solar, mica, war and far;
One, anemone, Balmoral, kitchen, lichen, laundry, laurel;
Gertrude, German, wind and mind, scene, Melpomene, mankind.
Billet does not rhyme with ballet, bouquet, wallet, mallet, chalet.
Blood and flood are not like food, nor is mould like should and would.
Viscous, viscount, load and broad, toward, to forward, to reward.
And your pronunciation’s OK when you correctly say croquet,
Rounded, wounded, grieve and sieve, friend and fiend, alive and live.
Ivy, privy, famous; clamour and enamour rhyme with hammer.
River, rival, tomb, bomb, comb, doll and roll and some and home.
Stranger does not rhyme with anger; neither does devour with clangour.
Souls but foul, haunt but aunt; font, front, wont, want, grand, and grant,
Shoes, goes, does. Now first say finger — and then singer, ginger, linger.
Real, zeal, mauve, gauze, gouge and gauge, marriage, foliage, mirage, and age.
Query does not rhyme with very, nor does fury sound like bury.
Dost, lost, post and doth, cloth, loth. Job, nob, bosom, transom, oath.
Though the differences seem little, we say actual — but victual.
Refer does not rhyme with deafer. Fe0ffer does, and zephyr, heifer.
Mint, pint, senate and sedate; dull, bull, and George ate late.
Scenic, Arabic, Pacific, science, conscience, scientific.
Liberty, library, heave and heaven, Rachel, ache, moustache, eleven.
We say hallowed, but allowed, people, leopard, towed, but vowed.
Mark the differences, moreover, between mover, cover, clover;
Leeches, breeches, wise, precise, chalice, but police and lice;
Camel, constable, unstable, principle, disciple, label.
Petal, panel, and canal, wait, surprise, plait, promise, pal.
Worm and storm, chaise, chaos, chair, Senator, spectator, mayor.
Tour, but our and succour, four. Gas, alas, and Arkansas.
Sea, idea, Korea, area, psalm, Maria, but malaria.
Youth, south, southern, cleanse and clean. Doctrine, turpentine, and marine.
Compare alien with Italian, dandelion and battalion.
Sally with ally, yea, ye, eye, I, ay, aye, whey, and key.
Say aver, but ever, fever, neither, leisure, skein, deceiver.
Heron, granary, canary. Crevice and device and aerie.
Face, but preface, not efface. Phlegm, phlegmatic, ass, glass, bass.
Large, but target, gin, give, verging, ought, out, joust and scour, scourging.
Ear, but earn and wear and tear do not rhyme with here but ere.
Seven is right, but so is even, Hyphen, roughen, nephew Stephen,
Monkey, donkey, Turk and jerk, ask, grasp, wasp, and cork and work.
Pronunciation (think of Psyche!) Is a paling stout and spikey?
Won’t it make you lose your wits, writing groats and saying grits?
It’s a dark abyss or tunnel: strewn with stones, stowed, solace, gunwale,
Islington and Isle of Wight, housewife, verdict and indict.
Finally, which rhymes with enough — though, through, plough, or dough, or cough?
Hiccough has the sound of cup. My advice is to give up!!!

Re: Election 2020
Getting back to the topic of this thread...
This was part of a post by David Gerrold on Facebook:
BTW, the entire post is worth a read; it also touches on several other topics: Bernie Sanders, the U.S. political system in general, the whole idea of "progress" in general, and others.
This was part of a post by David Gerrold on Facebook:
- The problem, as I see it, is that we run our political campaigns like a game of Survivor. It's no longer about plans and goals, it's no longer about programs and possibilities, it's no longer about qualifications and skill -- it's become a popularity contest. And sometimes, just like on Survivor, the biggest bully wins. And the rest of us pay the consequences.
This time around, we have to focus on the Democrat who can do the job. First part of the job is winning the nomination. Second part of the job is winning the General Election. Third part of the job is cleaning up the mess and reinventing the American spirit -- turning us away from the long national nightmare of racism and greed.
Here's how to select a candidate. Create a table, like a spreadsheet.
The horizontal axis can be the names of everyone who's declared or who might declare:
- Harris
Klobuchar
Sanders
Biden
Booker
Warren
Buttigieg
Castro
??
The vertical axis can be all the issues that you think are important:
- Economy
Gun Safety
Health Care
Climate Change
LGBTQ+ issues
Abortion Rights
Minority issues
Women's issues
Tax Reform
Electability/Likability
Etc.
Now you have a chart, a table. You can put a rating for each candidate's stand on each issue, 1 - 5. [Or 0 to 10, or -10 to +10, or whatever.] If you have a make-or-break issue -- say whether or not they like broccoli -- you can put in a negative rating too.
If you do it as an actual spreadsheet, you can get an instant total. You now have a ranking of who to vote for in the primaries. If your top candidate doesn't get traction and drops out, you can go to the next one. None of the candidates are going to be perfect, but whoever gets the nomination, that's the one that a majority of Democratic voters want to run -- and that's the only person who will have a chance of defeating Donald Trump.
Any vote for Jill Stein or any other third party vanity candidate won't be a vote denied to Trump -- it will be a vote denied to the one candidate who can defeat him.
That's the long version.
The short version. On this wall, we're going to discuss issues. We're going to discuss the relative merits of each candidate. We are not going to descend into negativity about any Democrat -- we are not going to divide ourselves. Because that's what the Republicans and the Russian Trolls want.
I'll have more to say on this shortly. - Harris

So they need to come to an agreement that the most important thing is wresting the White House from Trump's clutches, and they next need to realize that the best way to do that is to present a single candidate who can pull 50% of more of the voters behind him or her ... and accept that the infighting and sniping between each other during the 'primary' season is a counterproductive waste of time, energy, and resources — resources that will be needed in the assault against the national embarrassment that is Trumpism. They need to present a united front against a single opponent. They need to come to an agreement on ONE candidate, and each and every one of them must then throw their support behind that person. And they need to do it sooner rather than later.
They underestimated the strength and power of Trump's base once already. They cannot allow themselves to do it again.

Re: Election 2020
I quite like "Obama" as a Presidential name - sounds Irish... No chance he might run again, I suppose? I don't want to waste my vote on some Green clown and for sure the Republicans are not going to come up with anyone worth as much as a bucket of warm spit.
To misquote a clever chap, I don't give a pinch of owl dung for Sanders.

Well then, obviously when you make your own chart/table/spreadsheet/whatever (per David Gerrold's suggestion, above) one of the items on the vertical axis will be "Presidential-sounding name"...right?MajGenl.Meade wrote:Keeping it substantive...
