BTW -- I don't subscribe to premium channels so I haven't a clue as to what constitutes a miniseries, or a short lived, arced, group of stories.

Most miniseries and made-for-TV movies were on network television.

As I recall, the very first mini-series was Roots, long before the advent of cable...Scooter wrote:Most miniseries and made-for-TV movies were on network television.
In fact most of the best known mini-series were probably created in the 70s and 80s,...

Rich Man, Poor Man came before, there may have been others, but Roots probably established the viability of the format.

I believe the made-for-TV-movie concept goes back to the late 60s, with ABC's Movie Of The Week
Re: Name that made-for-TV movie or miniseries
And a little after that came limited run shows in rotation. I recall NBC had a "series" called "The Bold Ones" which had (at various times), 3-5 different series run in a rotation (one about doctors, one about lawyers, one about police, even one about a senator. Another similar NBC series, The Mystery Movie, spawned Columbo and MccCoud and McMKillan and wife. Not exactly miniseries, but a way to use unproduced pilots and market the show to audinces, probably for less money, as those involved were seeking to keep costs down in the hopes it would be picked up.
