Congratulations to our gentlemen
England today beat the old enemy (Australia) by eight wickets. If you're not a cricket fan - trust me, that's a wellying. It's World Cup time.
Now for NZ in the final. We beat them by 119 runs (a pasting - slightly less than a wellying) in the group stage of the World Cup so if you are betting folk I'd risk a £ or 2 on the final. Just sayin'.
And yes I know - to those of us who are old school they are players, not gentlemen.

Did someone say "cricket?"

Is this that "Ashes" thingie, the one with the "trophy" that looks like it came out of a gum ball machine?England today beat the old enemy (Australia) by eight wickets.
Re: Congratulations to our gentlemen
Oh I'm sorry, it's not that contest for the kiddie-sized trophy...
Something called the "Cricket World Cup" competition is going on...
Who knew?

Who cared?
Anyone with a greater attention span than a kitten. That's who.
People in New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, England, India, Sri Lanka, West Indies, Afghanistan, Bangla Desh, and Pakistan just to name the teams that qualified. Great competition this time around; England did the job and now all we have to do is knock the Kiwis off the perch.

I see what you did there. There is a book titled Kiwis Can Fly.MajGenl.Meade wrote: England did the job and now all we have to do is knock the Kiwis off the perch.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

England win the World Cup!!!!
I could not put it better than the Guardian's OBO (over by over = running commentary) specialist:

A gonzo match, to be sure. Especially because today I have been trying almost simultaneously to keep up with the British Grand Prix (well done Lewis!); the Tour on Bastille Day; the Wimbledon men's final (which went to an extraordinary fifth set tie breaker at 12 games each - new this year at Wimbledon);and of course the cricket. I'm knackered. I think I'll go lie down for a little while.Archer is on his knees, almost in tears. I cannot begin to imagine what New Zealand are going through. They deserve to win, unquestionably, but were beaten in circumstances that would have been beyond Hunter S Thompson on acid, never mind your average scriptwriter.

As an Englishman I am, of course, far too modest to point out that England is the only country which has won (men's) football, rugby and cricket World Cups. So I won't. Please forget that I said that.

That's okay Andy, feel free to speak up; perfectly appropriate...As an Englishman I am, of course, far too modest to point out that England is the only country which has won (men's) football, rugby and cricket World Cups.
As an American, I can tell you that we consider those to be modest accomplishments...

And the mainstream America sports press talks about how nothing is going on now, with the NBA and NFL inactive and MLB months away from providing a compelling story.ex-khobar Andy wrote: Especially because today I have been trying almost simultaneously to keep up with the British Grand Prix (well done Lewis!); the Tour on Bastille Day; the Wimbledon men's final (which went to an extraordinary fifth set tie breaker at 12 games each - new this year at Wimbledon);and of course the cricket. Re: Congratulations to our gentlemen
Imagine this. Your baseball team is losing 7-2 in the bottom of the 9th. The bases are loaded and your star hitter sends a long, long ball out toward the track. It's going to be caught; everyone tags up to see if there's a run or two to be had. As the fielder reaches up to make the catch, the ball strikes a small sparrow (poor thing) and it slews past the glove, hits the fielder's shoulder and bounces over for a home run (the ball, not the bird). 7-6 with two batters still to go. That's about what happened to New Zealand yesterday. As an American, I can tell you that we consider those to be modest accomplishments...
Needing 242 to win, England were down to the last three "pitches" needing to score nine runs. Not impossible but unlikely. Stokes hit a ball to the outfield; as our best batter, he must score two runs to stay "on strike" (that is, facing the last 2 balls). He dives along the ground, sliding to be safe for the second score. . . and the ball, thrown in by the outfielder toward the "catcher" in the hope of getting an out, strikes Stokes's bat and careens off over the boundary for four more runs. 3 runs to win; 2 balls to go. They got 2 and the game was tied 241 - 241, England winning the "super-over" - 6 more pitches to each team, similar in spirit to the manner in which a tie in an NCAA American football game is decided.
Yes, listening to some folk talking about modest accomplishments gives one a rather good idea of what the Houyhnhnms heard from the deformed creatures that Gulliver first encountered in their land.

Wow! The excitement is palpable.

Why do you guys think I've been away so much over the last two months?
Ashes series starts in two weeks time!!
Looks like the US will be indulging in the only international team sport it excels at soon too. (Depending if Iran gives it a game or not.)

Re: Congratulations to our gentlemen
Looks like what Meade is saying (if I've waded through all that criciketese correctly) is that England didn't really deserve to win; they just won on a lucky fluke...
Re: Congratulations to our gentlemen
I'd not disagree on that Jim. However, to say it was all due to the fluke would be to detract from the incredible 8 hours of play, at the highest levels of sporting prowess, and sportsmanship, which preceded it.

Fuck those other guys I got a promotion and a patent bonus today.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.
