Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

The Flash is DC or AC/DC these days

I was aware of that. It's just that with the way Disney (who owns Marvel now, I believe) is 'reimagining' everything — casting b⃥l⃥a⃥c⃥-⃥ ... excuse me, "people of color" in such roles as Ariel from "Little Mermaid", the Genie from "Aladdin", and the four primary characters from "Lion King"; a female Captain Marvel; and gay superheroes (there are several characters in both the Marvel and DC universes that are gay as a matter of canon with movies either out or in the works, and we saw a brief 'blink-and-you'll-miss-it' scene at the end of "Avengers: Endgame") — despite public and fan-base outcry, I figured that borrowing a character from another universe and tinkering with it, with or without permission, was their next logical step.MajGenl.Meade wrote:The Flash is DC or AC/DC these days
But they still don't have the balls to re-release "Song of the South".....

Re: New Marvel Character?
Well, to be fair, the genie was "of color" in the cartoon, blue as I recall. And so is Will Smith in the movie, at least from the photos I have seen.
And as for Ariel, yes she was white in the cartoon (and apparently so in the Copenhagen Little Mermaid statue), but is this a re-imagining or just a casting choice? As i recall from reading my kids the Han Chrisitian Andersen tale many times, there was nothing in her background that made her have to be white, and casting her as black is (IMHO) as inconsequential as having her speak English when Andersen originally wrote her as speaking Danish (at least whhile she could speak). Now casting her as a gay man would be different, but I haven't seen that .

Well if Dr. Watson (of Sherlock Holmes fame) can be an Asian woman, who knows what might occur?

BTW -- the series finale of 'Elementary' is schedule for tomorrow night. One of my commercial broadcast favs. ('Madam Secretary', 'Good Fight', 'Elementary')Big RR wrote:Well if Dr. Watson (of Sherlock Holmes fame) can be an Asian woman, who knows what might occur?
As a "reimagined" classic I found it -- for the most part -- to be well written, and well acted.

Now that it’s ending, I’ll put it in my queue.

White? Really?
I'm getting more of a brownish-green impression.
Every Disney version of that story should be burned to ashes along with the producers and all of their children.
If they do as badly with the "snow queen" I would go back and kill their parents too.

True rubato, but that statue has been decapitated several times, covered with paint, even blown off the pedestal and sunk to the bottom of the harbor, so it's no surprise she's a little green.
As for disney, the less you try to compare any of their fairy tale reboots with the original stories, the more they can be tolerated. They're made for children (and dumbed down far too much from the originals IMHO), but at least up through Beauty and the Beast I think they were watchable (well maybe not the Uncle Remus one (Song of the South) or the Jungle Book, but that's just me)--after that the animators took a lot of shortcuts and any semblance of a story became scarce (and the music became more and more generic and annoying). Of course, then they abandoned any drawn animation so they could have characters who looked just like the crap they sold, so we saw were their

The Danes have a passion for self-expression which will not be denied. (my people) They also love that statue so it will always be put right again.
The Disney crappified versions of real works of art are not for children they are for stupid parents trying to raise stupid children. (Disney did do this one) In the real 'frog prince' it is not a kiss which releases him it is that the princess is so revolted by the frog she throws him against a wall and kills him.
If they at least made new works (with no more than the usual casual larceny in writing new stories) I could at least respect the effort and take some pleasure in the product. The Pixar movies for ex. are well done and well written.

Re: New Marvel Character?
Well, I haven't seen the Frog Prince, so I'll refrain from commenting on it, but in the Little Mermaid, I think I'd prefer (in a cartoon for kid's) the "happy" ending to the quasi-religious one Andersen wrote about--you know her quest to achieve an immortal soul, her being taken up as a daughter of the air to serve men and perhaps get one so she could one day dwell in heaven with the lucky humans who are born with immortal souls. It would be difficult to put into the last few minutes of a full length cartoon--far more easy to discuss when reading the story (or even present in the story's text).
But I agree with yu about one thing--if the Disney movies are the only thing a kid ever learns, (s)he will be stupid. And as they get older, it's worth rereading them again to more fully appreciate what the author was saying.
And as for the Pixar movies which I see as just full length advertisements for merchandise, I've presented my opinion about them before.

I don't remember seeing too many WALL-E toys or UP action figures, or even Ratatouille recipe books.Big RR wrote:And as for the Pixar movies which I see as just full length advertisements for merchandise, I've presented my opinion about them before.
However, as for the Cars, Toy Story, or The Incredibles universes — I'll concede the point.

Re: New Marvel Character?
Bill--if you google, you can find the assorted merchandise for all three (but you're right, no Ratatouille recipe); they may not be as popular as some of the others, but those dolls, action figures, whatever, do exist. I doubt Disney woudn't have it any other way.
