Trump: Why Wasn’t 100th Anniversary of Women’s Suffrage Observed ‘Years Ago?’

Yesterday, President Trump signed the Women’s Suffrage Centennial Commemorative Coin Act. The effect of this law is self-explanatory — it creates a coin to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment, ratifying women’s suffrage. Or, at least, it is self-explanatory to everybody except Donald Trump, who was mystified as to why the 100th anniversary was not recognized earlier.

After working his way through the prepared remarks, Trump interjected with his own riff. “They’ve been working on this for years and years,” he said, suddenly wondering, “And I’m curious, why wasn’t it done a long time ago, and also — well, I guess the answer to that is because now I’m president, and we get things done. We get a lot of things done that nobody else got done.”

The task of explaining to Trump that “centennial” means “100th anniversary” fell to Republican Senator Marsha Blackburn. Blackburn gently recounted that the bill worked its way through both chambers of Congress. As is usually the case with symbolic bills observing now-uncontroversial events, this one met with no opposition whatsoever. “We passed it out of the Senate with every single senator voting for it in June,” she noted, at which point Trump — apparently unfamiliar with the common practice of unanimous votes for these kinds of things — interjected, “Wow.” She proceeded to note that “August 18th, 1920 is when the 19th Amendment was ratified.”

Mystery solved! They’re observing the women’s suffrage centennial now because next year is the centennial. That is how time works.

Even after this clear accounting, Trump nonetheless was still confused. “So why wasn’t this done a long time ago — years ago?,” he asked again. At this point, one of Trump’s appointees told him that “it started out with you nominating Kay Coles James and myself as the U.S. treasurer on the commission.”

Another attendee attempted to provide a more satisfying and ego-flattering answer. “You asked why this hadn’t gotten done before,” said Independent Women’s Forum chairman Heather Higgins, “Jovita basically took a page from the Wollman Rink in New York” — the building of this skating rink on time and under budget is one of Trump’s most notable noncriminal business triumphs — “and overcame an awful lot of the process and obstacles to make sure that something happened on time and in the right way.”

The truth is, there aren’t a lot of obstacles to minting commemorative coins to celebrate uncontroversial historic milestones. We do them all the time — at least one a year for more than 30 years, and often many a year. But emphasizing that this commemorative coin was only accomplished due to Trump’s inspiring example probably seemed like a better answer than explaining to Trump that nobody commemorated the women’s suffrage centennial years ago because it wasn’t the centennial yet.

Trump's dumb enough to get confused, that's true. He may not know what a centennial is; probably thinks it's where they bury dead people. But he's also woefully ignorant of English and the need to define a subject before launching some otherwise nonsensical verbal bowel movement.

I suspect that he was wondering why women's suffrage had not been honored on a coin years before - say at the 50th anniversary. His focus was to claim that he (unlike previous presidents) had got it done; and just in time for the 100th!

He is of course a noble example of enthusiasm in women's suffering.

I'm starting to get the impression that our president, Donald J. Trump, is more often clueless than not.

What an asshole.

It was unpopular and discontinued shortly after being circulated, but a super rich casino magnate should remember the Susan B. Anthony dollar depicting a suffrage activist. That may have been from a time he was dodging the draft, though, so he didn't read the papers. Duh, I forgot, he doesn't read.

Between his TV beginnings on Win Ben Stein's Money (one of my all-time favorite shows) and his current late night gig, Jimmy Kimmel co-hosted a tongue-in-cheek extremely sexist and politically incorrect program called, The Man Show... (it was clearly aimed at the college boy crowd...)

Here's a bit they did on "women's suffrage":

Nothing new about this.  Just recently there was that flap about fundie Christians and how they would react if they found our their son or daughter was a "homosapiens" — and many many years ago there was a supposed 'transcript' of a speech by a politician in which he accused his opponent of an entire litany of questionable activities making the rounds.
My fellow citizens, it is an honor and pleasure to be here today.  My opponent has openly admitted he feels an affinity towards your city, but I happen to like this area.  It might be a salubrious place to him, but to me it is one of the nation's most delightful garden spots.

When I embarked upon this political campaign, I hoped that it could be conducted on a high level, and that my opponent would be willing to stick to the issues.  Unfortunately, he has decided to be tractable instead — to indulge in unequivocal language, to eschew the use of outright lies in his speeches, and even to make repeated veracious statements about me.

At first I tried to ignore these scrupulous, unvarnished fidelities.  Now I will do so no longer.  If my opponent wants a fight, HE'S GOING TO GET ONE!

It might be instructive to start with his background.  My friends, have you ever accidentally dislodged a rock on the ground and seen what was underneath?  Well, exploring my opponent's background is dissimilar.  All the slime and filth and corruption you can possibly imagine, even in your wildest dreams, are glaringly non-existent in this man's life, even in his childhood!

Let us take a very quick look at that childhood.  It is a known fact that, on a number of occasions, he emulated older boys at a certain playground.  It is also known that his parents not only permitted him to masticate excessively in their presence, but also even urged him to do so.  Most explicable of all, this man who poses as a paragon of virtue exacerbated his own sister when they were both teenagers!

I ask you, my fellow Americans:  Is this the kind of person we want in public office to set an example for our youth?

Of course, it's not surprising that he should have such a typically pristine background — no, not when you consider the other members of his family.  His female relatives put on a constant pose of purity, innocence, and claim they are inscrutable, yet every one of them had taken part in hortatory activities.  The men in the family are likewise completely amenable to moral suasion.

My opponent's second cousin is Mormon, and his uncle was a flagrant heterosexual.  His sister, who has always been obsessed by sects, once worked as a proselyte outside a church.  His father was secretly chagrined at least a dozen times by matters of a pecuniary nature.  His youngest brother wrote an essay extolling the virtues of being Homo sapiens.  His great-aunt expired from a degenerative disease.  His nephew subscribes to a phonographic magazine.  His wife was a thespian before their marriage, and even performed the act in front of paying customers.  And his own mother had to resign from a woman's organization in her later years because she was an admitted sexagenarian!

Now, then, what shall we say of the man himself?  I can tell you in solemn truth that he is the very antithesis of political radicalism, economic irresponsibility, and personal depravity.  His own record proves that he has frequently discountenanced treasonable, unAmerican philosophies, and has perpetuated many overt acts as well. He perambulated his infant son on the streets.  He practiced nepotism with his uncle and first cousin.  He attempted to interest a thirteen-year-old girl into philately.  He participated in a seance at a private residence where, among other odd goings-on, there was incense.  He has declared himself in favor of more homogeneity on college campuses, and while a student himself openly and freely matriculated before the college dean.  He has advocated social intercourse in mixed company — and has even taken part in such gatherings himself!

He has been deliberately averse to crime in our city streets.  He has urged our Protestant and Jewish citizens to develop more catholic tastes.  Last summer he committed a piscatorial act from the deck of a boat that was flying the American flag.  And finally, at a time when we must be on our guard against all foreign '-ism's, he has coolly announced his belief in altruism — and his fervent hope that some day this entire nation will be altruistic!

I beg you, my friends, to oppose this man whose life work and ideas are so openly and avowedly compatible with our American way of life. A vote for him would be a vote for the perpetuation of everything we hold dear.

The facts are clear.  The record speaks for itself.  DO YOUR DUTY!!

If only our Grifter-in-Chief could speak with such alopecia.

I have heard that he, too, masticates in the Lincoln bedroom -- with Stephen Miller.

This statement is of course true....however, what Trump apparently doesn't realize is that the EXECUTIVE BRANCH is the "law enforcers"—and that as Chief Executive, he himself is the Chief Law Enforcer. Whoops, he inadvertently told the truth this time.

George Zimmerman sues family of Trayvon Martin, others for $100 million

BARTOW, Fla. (AP) — Neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who was acquitted of the 2012 killing of Trayvon Martin, is suing the teen’s parents, family attorney, the attorney’s book publisher and prosecutors who tried his case, claiming he was defamed when they allowed a witness to give false testimony in an attempt to incriminate him.

Zimmerman’s lawsuit, filed Wednesday, said a trial witness pretended to be the last person to talk to Martin by phone before he was killed when the witness was actually the half-sister of the caller.

According to the lawsuit, Brittany Diamond Eugene didn’t want to testify that she had been talking to Martin before he was killed. So her half-sister, Rachel Jeantel, pretended that she was talking to the teen before he was fatally shot. Jeantel ended up testifying at Zimmerman’s 2013 trial in Sanford, Florida.

Martin was killed during a struggle with Zimmerman, who was a Neighborhood Watch volunteer.

Martin was black. Zimmerman’s father is white and his mother is Hispanic. Zimmerman’s trial raised questions about race and Florida’s “stand your ground” self-defense law which allows people to use force without retreating if they feel threatened.

In a statement on Wednesday, Martin family attorney Benjamin Crump called the allegations “unfounded and reckless.”

“This plaintiff continues to display a callous disregard for everyone but himself, re-victimizing individuals whose lives were shattered by his own misguided actions. He would have us believe that he is the innocent victim of a deep conspiracy, despite the complete lack of any credible evidence to support his outlandish claims,” Crump’s statement said. “This tale defies all logic, and it’s time to close the door on these baseless imaginings.”

Zimmerman’s lawyer in the lawsuit, Larry Klayman, was planning news conference in South Florida on Thursday to discuss the complaint. The lawsuit, filed in a central Florida county where Zimmerman is now living, seeks $100 million for allegations of malicious prosecution and conspiracy.

Klayman had planned to screen a film by conservative filmmaker Joel Gilbert detailing the allegations in the lawsuit. But the venue, Coral Gables Art Cinema, tweeted Wednesday that it was canceling the rental arrangement, saying it had been unaware of the details.

Klayman is a conservative activist who founded the watchdog group, Judicial Watch.

Last July, an ethics committee of the bar in the District of Columbia recommended that Klayman’s law license be suspended for more than two years.

Trump says pro-Israel group will vote for him to protect their money

Speaking on Saturday, Trump referred to members of the Israeli American Council as “brutal killers” and “not nice people” but claimed they would vote for him to avoid a wealth tax, as proposed by Democratic challengers Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren.

“A lot of you are in the real estate business because I know you very well, you’re brutal killers.  You’re not nice people at all, but you have to vote for me.  You have no choice,” the president said.  “You’re not going to vote for Pocahontas, I can tell you that.  You’re not going to vote for the wealth tax!”

He continued by repeating a false claim to the crowd that supporters of the tax want to take “100 per cent of your wealth away”.  “Even if you don’t like me — some of you don’t (and) some of you I don’t like at all actually — you’re going to be my biggest supporters because you’ll be out of business in about 15 minutes if they (the Democrats) get in,” he added.

Trump’s stereotyping of members of a Jewish organisation as being politically motivated by money was condemned as antisemitic.  “It’s not even coded antisemitism.  It’s not a dog-whistle.  He’s saying this.  Out loud.  To a room full of Jews,” Danya Ruttenberg, an American rabbi and author, wrote on Twitter.

Earlier in the speech, Trump also questioned the loyalty of American Jews to Israel.  “We have to get the people of our country, of this country, to love Israel more,” he told the crowd.  “Because you have people that are Jewish people, that are great people — they don’t love Israel enough.”

Aaron Keyak, a former head of the National Jewish Democratic Council, said Trump’s remarks were “dangerous”.  “Trump’s insistence on using antisemitic tropes when addressing Jewish audiences is dangerous and should concern every member of the Jewish community — even Jewish Republicans,” he said.

The president’s comments on Saturday were not the first time he has been accused of antisemitism.  During his presidential campaign in 2015, Trump used an antisemitic trope about the influence of Jewish people in politics when he spoke to the Republican Jewish Coalition.  He told the group:  “You’re not going to support me because I don’t want your money.  You want to control your politicians, that’s fine.”  In August 2019, Trump also said any Jewish person who voted for the Democratic Party was showing “a total lack of knowledge or great disloyalty”.

The suggestion that American Jews have dual loyalty to Israel and the US drew sharp criticism and accusations of racism.  “If this is about Israel, then Trump is repeating a dual loyalty claim, which is a form of antisemitism,” Halie Soifer, executive director of the Jewish Democratic Council of America, said after Trump’s comments.  “If this is about Jews being ‘loyal’ to him, then Trump needs a reality check.”

————————
It is long past time to get rid of Trump.  At one time we might have dismissed talk like this as just being a loose cannon on deck, but the increasing amount of irrational comments and statements, immoderate speech, and questionable policies coming from the POTUS has shown that he is more of an open flame in the powder magazine itself.  And the fate of both the USS Arizona and HMS Hood shows what happens in that sort of circumstance.

In response to BB's post about Trump's antiSemitism.

And we have a situation in the UK where Corbyn is being pilloried for antiSemitism. British leftists have long been accused of this because they are opposed to what might be called Zionism - which is the political movement to establish and maintain a Jewish homeland regardless of whom it might displace. The Palestinians who lost farmland they had owned and operated for generations were unfortunate bystanders.

I think Corbyn has always effectively distinguished between anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. Of course, the Netanyahus of this world find it convenient to bleat anti-Semitism every time someone points out that maybe it's not a good idea to plant settlements on land they captured in 1967 despite every UN declaration that they shouldn't.

Trump is the one who told us that he didn't want black men counting his money, just short guys in yarmulkes.

The man is clearly an ignoranus, as Gob succinctly put it in another thread.
