In Hieronymus Bosch's fantastical painting Garden of Earthly Delights there is musical notation displayed on the butt of one of the figures in hell. Wanna hear what 15th Century butt music sounds like? I knew you did.

I really like the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. I did see some of his stuff in the originals in a museum in Venice. That is another story.

But this music? I kind of like it. I would never call it hellacious.

Turns out what is being played is a transcription of what was inscribed on the poor wretch's arse, as noted here:
Listen to Hieronymus Bosch’s “500-Year-Old Butt Song From Hell”

Personally, though, when I saw the term "butt music" I was expecting something more like this:

The instrument being played by the musician on the right is a 'sackbutt', the Renaissance/Baroque-era ancestor of the modern trombone.  The name itself is believed to derive from either the Middle French sacquer (to pull) and bouter (to push) or the Spanish sacar (to draw or pull) and bucha (a tube or pipe).

A beautiful rendition of one of my favourite songs.

I'm Too Old For This

Guess I thought this time of life would be different
Thought I could cruise into my golden years
But I just can't seem to put my mind at rest
'Cause I don't believe my eyes, I don't believe my ears
The willful ignorance across the nation
The screaming yahoos that rage on every station
It makes me crazy and I'm too old for this

Folks in this country used to strive to be better
Work to be smarter so they could understand
Now we idolize the clueless and the mean
It's hip to be stupid, just wear the right brand
I sound like a geezer but it's a disgrace
Try to discuss it and they get all in your face
It's raining morons and I'm too old for this

Too old to see the lack of compassion
Too old to watch it go out of fashion
So easy just to condescend and smirk
When I know I've got to do the work
So I do what I have to do

Fancy churches preaching 'hate thy neighbor'
Corporate lies growing louder every day
Folks too scared to know they're being taken
TV news is poison but we just can't turn away
Too many enemies; almost no friends
Read your history, this is how it always ends
It's sad and ugly and I'm too old for this

Too old to watch the men we elected
Sit on their hands when it's change we expected
So hard to keep the bigotry out of my head
So hard not to wish some people dead
I got to keep a hold on myself

Don't want this anger; I got to stay clear
Too much to do before I get out of here
I still believe in peace but I'm too old for this

Too old to be a knee-jerk reactor
Too old to let my judgment be a factor
Dylan said do not go gentle into that good night
He said rage against the dying of the light
But I don't wanna fight

I'll stick with love, beautiful thunder
Someone who keeps his cool always makes 'em wonder
I'll work to search out the best part of me that I can
And maybe find some kinda better man
Then I'll do what I have to do
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

I was never a Cross fan (I remember Sailing but I think that's about it) but I enjoy this as a piece of poetry.

Robert Plant and Alison Krauss are back and still an amazing duo, here doing a Lucinda Williams hit:

Love the way Plant casually kicks up the mike stand. Rock star.

They're on tour this summer. Might try to catch them in Philly or maybe NYC.

I was mildly surprised at seeing the drummer playing the maraca by sticking it in his sock of his off-foot to keep the rhythm.  I didn't think drummers had a free foot like that, as most drum setups I've seen have the drummer usually controlling a kick bass with one foot and a high-hat cymbal with the other.  But I suppose, since he was using brushes on the drums, he was just a rhythm background rather than providing a driving beat or power drum accompaniment.

No hi-hat in that set-up. Wouldn't have been out of place, but the maraca provides a similar function with more subtlety, the floor tom and snare being dampened already and, as you note, the drummer using brushes. What fascinates me is the electric guitar in the clip; what *is* that thing?

Looks homemade, nearly as weird as the stick bass in the Gabriel clip.

That's JD McPherson playing a custom guitar made by TK Smith, as noted on the TK Smith website.  They even show the same clip.

Here's a little more technical info on the instrument — https://tksmith.net/2015/07/19/smith-custom-jd-mcpherson/

I always wanted one of those stick basses back in 70s/80s, could never afford it. Eventually settled on a brand new Gibson Victory, which played great but weighed about a million pounds.

Gob, do you know the story behind James Taylor’s Fire and Rain song? I didn’t know until recently but maybe I’m just the last to know. It made me appreciate the song more than before.
