And there's Joe again, trying to dictate to black and biracial people how they should respond to the assaults they face. Because Joe always knows better than they do when race is an issue and when it is not, and won't stand for them getting uppity.

There goes Scooter again, telling our fellow Plan B members that I shouldn't express my opinion because I'm not woke enough and that I couldn't possibly be sympathetic to racism and I shouldn't require more information before deciding to label something as a racist act.

Except that's not what you tried to do; you decided, based on your omniscience about all things racial, that it wasn't racist. You said it was "ridiculous" to address it as a racial issue. So much for seeking more information.

I expressed my opinion that the librarian giving that child a haircut wasn't a racist act. There isn't enough information in that article to prove otherwise. Yes, based on what little I know of the incident, it seems ridiculous to label the librarian as a racist.

Apparently you've declared it was a racist act based on the copied & pasted article. That's your opinion and we disagree. And thank you for calling me omniscient about racial issues. It's not always easy being omniscient but I have no choice in the matter.

An unauthorized bad haircut is the issue. Bringing race into the discussion because the child happens to bi-racial is ridiculous.
But some white people have to beat themselves up about race, if they don't how else will they feel smugly superior to other white people?

It may be more accurate to say some white people have to beat up other white people about race in order to feel smugly superior to them and claim solidarity between shirt-lifting and being "of colour"

No, actually I never said any such thing, if you read the record. I said that the child's race was an issue because the teacher took it upon herself to cut her hair when she didn't know what she was doing with hair of that child's racial makeup. Her ignorance of racial difference made the problem worse, because somehow she thought she knew better than the professional stylist who had tried to fix the original damage. I can recognize that race played a role, without labelling her a racist, which I never did. But apparently the white fragility of the usual suspects makes them incapable of recognizing that distinction.

But Scooter, if we accept your premise, what do you do with the barber r consmetologist who tells a person of another race "I don't know how to cut that sort of hair, you'll have to go somewhere else"? there were times when that would have beeN seen as racist (kind of like, "Yeah, I cut hair, but not your kind"). I'm not saying race was not an issue here (it may well have been, I'd need more information first to decide), but the "different hair" idea cuts both ways (no pun intended).

If they aren't qualified to do it, then they aren't qualified to do it. There's a reason for barbers/stylists who cater to Black clientele, because many others don't know how.

I would prefer someone tell me they don’t know what they’re doing rather than fuck up my hair (it’s happened a few times as my hair has some unusual traits to it)
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

So far, zero evidence that the "haircut" was a bad one. Shouldn't have been done, obvs. But the original article and the follow-up link offer no suggestion of incompetence or f-d upness.

The child is 1/3 "black" if we have to assign numbers. Her hair does not appear "nappy" (racist term meaning "tightly curled") but happy (curls all over, almost Shirley Templesque). So maybe she got 2/3 of a good haircut.

Amazing how we are all such experts on what did and didn't happen while all the time claiming not to know what did and didn't happen.

It may stem simply from ignorance rather than historical superiority or other malevolence we are used to seeing but it is a marker none the less. The simple fact the librarian did not know that her cosmetologist training DID NOT qualify her to work on all hair types illustrates this.

The thing about being ignorant is by definition you don’t know it.
I took care of a biracial, special needs child in a home setting. Her mother, who is white and had adopted her, treated her as she would a white child with respect to bathing and hair washing. The child's hair and skin was getting very dried out. Mother finally took the child to a black hairstylist and asked for instructions on how to care for this child properly. Stylist informed mom that we were over-washing the child's hair and she set us, mom and nurses, on the proper path to not frying the child's hair with over-washing.

Setting aside for a minute the braiding, the knots, the extensions, the weaves, and all the other add-ons (like the cow dung that certain African tribes still continue to smear into their hair back on the Dark Continent), the primary reason for cutting hair is to keep it out of the eyes. How fucking hard can it be to do that?

The texture of the hair requires specialized techniques to cut it to the desired style and length. Otherwise, you get the uneven mess demonstrated in the picture in the OP.

After going back to review the pictures in the OP, I think the girl's hair looks better after the haircut. Does that make me a racist?

so you would have no problem with a white barber/stylist with a sign outside saying "I do not do black persons' hair?? Somehow I don't think everyone would be in agreement with that.

Face it, I am generally in agreement with you, but I wonder if that would prompt action from some.

I don't believe any such sign would be necessary, because Black people have had to learn that they can't trust anyone to work on their hair unless they know them to be capable of doing it, and wouldn't walk into any barbershop/salon blindly expecting to find someone who can.

It's not only people with African heritage who must be cautious. If I, an unblack person, walk into a barbershop blindly, I really don't know if I'm going to get a good haircut either. Don't barber colleges teach people how to cut all hair? There's thick, thin, twisted, curly and kinky, to name a few hair types. What kind of barber school would only teach how to cut one type of hair? A racist barber school?

Clearly the Butcher of the Mount Pleasant Public School District did not attend a school that taught her how to handle the hair of people of African heritage.
