It’s ambiguous. McDonald went out of the farming biz and opened up a burger joint. A closer examination indicates Bingo may have been the farmer not the dog.

For the record, I gave serious consideration and researched your idea heavily after reading this in another thread:
I don't know how to break this to you, Joe, but musicians -- like all storytellers-- sometimes take liberties with the text......
I found a rare recording of Jimi Hendrix singing the Bingo song when he was off stage at Woodstock. It's so rare that I can't reproduce it. But he sang it this way:
"There was a farmer...hey....what the?... who had himself a dog, 'scuse me.... but the cat's dog's name was Bingo.... uh foxy dog it was uh...."
So I think Bingo may or not have been the dog's name and it depends on the artist performing it at the time.

There are people who now insist on being referred to by plural pronouns such as 'us/we/they/them' instead of the heretofore normal of 'he' or 'she', and personally, I still have a very hard time wrapping my mind around referring to a to a single individual hominid biped as 'they' no matter how many personalities/genders said individual claims.
The other thing I wonder as I ponder this further ... if I were to shoot and kill someone like this, would I be charged with a single homicide or would I face multiple murder charges? -"BB'-
Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?
