Why is stuff going wrong

Post by MajGenl.Meade »

I open the Plan B bookmark. There I am - all logged in. I select Quick links - Unread posts. And I am plunged back to the sign-in page.

Enter my user name and password - most of the time, voila, back in and being a pest. And I always select "Remember me" so I stay logged-in. Except (as above) I apparently don't stay logged in

Sometimes, my log-in fails and I have to do it once, twice, three times until it "takes"

Chatting to the balding one (by comparison) the other day - he could see me as "logged in" when I wasn't (on my side). I hadto log-in (as above) and then there I was.

Global weirding

Yeah, other stuff as well. The active topics page suddenly shrank to only one. It took me a while to find the thread on the July 6 Hearings because it had slipped off the first page.

And by the way, the TV critic on NPR Fresh Air today declared those hearings as the best summer tv short series.

I log in only if I have something interesting and fascinating to say and which would (IMNSHO) be well worth my friends' time to read. Like just now.

But my username and pw are in my browser so once I enter the first letter of my username, up it pops and I just click it and I am logged in. (Safari 16.5, ancient [7+ years now] MacBook Air.)

I never bother with the 'unread posts' thing. I come here most days so the ones I am following just rise to the top when there is a new post and I don't have to go looking for them.

The only problem I have it that I cannot see YouTube videos unless someone posts the link itself, but we've talked about that. It's a minor inconvenience at worst.

Unread posts means that you have not read them yet. How on earth do you find new posts that you might be interested in?

If you resolutely never read a new topic starting post you have not already read, then you will eventually look at no messages at all, no?

PS and why don't you use "remember me" so you don't have to log-in even a bit? er. . . when it's working which it isn't for me any more

In my experience the system kicks you out after so many days logged in so you have to manually login every so often - but it can be many days or even weeks between those resets.

I just go to the board index page and get this:

I can see that BSG posted to this thread a little while ago so I know it's new - the last post I was aware of was mine a few hours ago. So I open this thread and voila! it's magic.

And re 'remember me' - I generally do not log into things until I have to but that's not a hard and fast rule. So I would probably look at BSG's post and yours, and then if I feel like adding to the discussion I will log in.

I was on earlier today: I probably would not not have visited again until maybe this evening or tomorrow but I saw that James Lovelock (as in Gaia Hypothesis) had died at 103 and I was preparing a post about that. Unfortunately the board ate it and I have to start again.

I learned some time ago that when crafting a longer involved post, it makes sense to draft in an independent notes or word processing program and then paste when finished. Too many times the board has reloaded on me mid-draft and consumed paragraphs of brilliance. :arg

I find the “New Posts” option to be the most efficient way to keep up if you go to the site every day. It shows only things you haven’t looked at yet and allows you to skip over threads you’d rather avoid. If you miss a day at the site you may have to use another option to keep up, but once you catch up, you’ll never miss something new, whether it is an original post or an addition to a thread.
