They called Trump a satsuma!   :ok

I stayed up WAY too late Monday, so I was ass whooped yesterday and my quick pre-DNC nap turned into a full night's sleep - I MISSED IT ALL! Thank goodness I recorded it, I can spend the day watching while I work.

satsuma I did not know that word. My online dictionary says it could be a Tangerine, or maybe a cracked pot.

How about both?

I can't see anyone stopping Pete Buttigieg in 2032. He will be 50; and I assume (hope) that he will gain some more Cabinet level experience in a Harris administration.

Yes, it would be great to follow our first woman president with our first openly gay president. That's the America I want to grow old in.

I love BSG's little caveat in the post above: first OPENLY gay president.

Yes. We may have already seen our first gay president - who knows - if he kept it a secret some historians might find out down the road. You'll occasionally hear someone say "I don't know any gay (or trans) people!" S/he probably does: it's just that they didn't choose, for whatever reason, to share that information with her/him.

I see that one of Australia's famous openly gay penguins has died. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/08/22/worl ... -dead.html

Andy--I'd rather see Buttigieg get some more experience in elected office--preferably the senate; this is quite different from being a department head and would make him a better, more well rounded, president. Absent that, experience as a governor could be useful. None of it is essential, but I believe it could help make one a better president.

Also, I agree we may well have a had a gay president, maybe several--especially when you realize that for generation the press left the president's private life pretty much alone (compared to recent times). Sure, there were partisan smear campaigns, but nothing like what we have seen recently.

There's no way to ever know, but there is evidence that is very suggestive: https://www.smithsonianmag.com/history/ ... 180972992/

I read something recently (can't find it now) that made a convincing case that Buchanan was probably just asexual. Perhaps I want to believe it because, after Trump, he is probably about the worst president the U.S. ever had, and I'm not particularly keen to have him as "one of ours".

Well the Dems are absolutely killing it musically,. Did you see John Legend and Sheila E kicking Let's Go Crazy? I mean, the speeches and all are good, but they should just keep bringing out the bands! They had to bump James Taylor the other night and I guess that made old white ppl sad, but honestly they could play Prince and Stevie Wonder all night long and I wouldn't be mad.

But the RNC had the awesome talents of Felonius Trump on the self-playing piano

K Harris has just started. Very powerful speech from Adam Kinzinger, erstwhile R congressman from Illinois. "Democrats are patriots too!"

Well, it's not the most inspiring and energizing speech I've ever heard ...

... but she had me once I saw she was capable of communicating in complete and coherent sentences.

I grew up in Independence, Missouri, on the Eastern edge of Pendergast machine politics. I remember a phrase I heard many times just before elections. Sometimes it was a joke, sometimes it was bitter irony.

"Vote early and often."

After that machine fell apart from internal conflict and FBI nibbling away at the money, memories of that time ware the major driver for adopting voting machines. No one could look at your written ballot before it went into the box.
