Cliques?

Post by The Hen »

I have noticed mention in a couple of threads people mentioning "cliques" in reference to Plan B.

Now I am not around that much these days. What have I been missing?

Where are these cliques? What is the story?
Bah!

Hen other than quoting a post by Andrew from early Nov you are the only one bringing up "Cliques".

Not true, keld.

In a search of "Cliques" there are only 3 hits since the date I mentioned.

There are some earlier than that but I didn't figger they were relevant...

Ok I did another search, this time with "Clique".

Again (to me anyway) wether[sic] it is relevant enough to start a thread is debatable...

eta: it appears to be more a case of nationalist pride that clique(ism).

but that's just me.

I've seen occasions when Guin gets a little testy, I don't think she is alone. However I can only say for SURE that I am in that group sometimes (being testy that is). The only time I appear to be in a clique is when I have a common interest on the subject with other posters.

The first thread topic I remember starting online was at Cartalk and I commented on how there seemed to be a clique (that included Lord Jim, btw) at the time.

A "clique" is a group of people who dislike you or someone you like.

: a narrow exclusive circle or group of persons; especially : one held together by common interests, views, or purposes
In the social sciences, the word "clique" is used to describe a group of 2 to 12 (averaging 5 or 6) “persons who interact with each other more regularly and intensely than others in the same setting.”
a small, exclusive group of people; coterie; set.
I guess that is an example of A clique I don't think that's all inclusive...

ETA: For my part I think this entire board is composed of a clique of borderline Type A's.

'Clique' isn't the only term used on here Keld which is why searching wouldn't do much good. 'Inner circle' is one I've seen used but I'm sure there are others.

There now follows the first in a series* of helpful guides to the internet:

How to Spot a Forum Clique

1.) Look for the most active members on the forum (the top 10 post counts is usually a good indicator).
2.) Disregard those members who act like complete bell ends to the others.
3.) You now have a list of the members who interact most frequently without acting like complete bell ends to each other.
4.) This must be a clique; complete with secret handshakes and clandestine PM meeting where they discuss other members.
5.) Accuse!

*At the time of writing it is a series of one.
Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?

I posted about it, yesterday, in the "US should tax the world" thread. I said:
Guinevere wrote:This thread is a perfect example of the clique-ism that makes PlanB a less and less attractive place to post. Apparently the tag line "above all argue" only applies to those in the inner circle. All other are taken to task for exercising their privilege to do the same.
Later, in further expressing my frustration with the tone of the discussion, it was suggested:
Gob wrote: Don't like the way I respond to Andrew's provocations?? Feel free to put me on ignore.
I posted the first quoted comment above, immediately after Gob's post.

If you want more clarity, read the thread. The snippy exchanges and blow-ups occurred not just because of what was said, but because who said it -- and the actual content had very little to do with the blow-up. That kind of piling on occurs too often around here, or at least enough to make it stand out to me in the threads I have time to read.

Guin

I do not disagree that there are personalities on this board that are at odds, most of the time if not continuously.

Making light of it and trying not to be of any particular group and still agreeing or disagreeing as the case may be is precarious. Sometimes I succeed sometimes I fail.

Doubt this helps you but that's all I got to offer...

You know, I have to wonder if that thread had been started by say, Dave/Mort, and the responses had been exactly the same, whether we would have seen comments about "cliques" or "piling on"....

I suspect not. Seems to me this consideration of "who said something rather than what's said" cuts more than one way....
