US medical drama House is to finish its eight-year run at the end of this series in April, it has been announced.
The show's producers, including British star Hugh Laurie, said it was a "painful" decision but that the time had come to bring it to a close.
Laurie plays Gregory House, the brilliant but troubled doctor with an unconventional bedside manner.
It has won nearly 40 awards since it began, including two Emmys and two Golden Globes.
House has won the favourite TV drama prize at the People's Choice Awards for the past four years.
The show also stars Omar Epps, Robert Sean Leonard and Charlyne Yi.
In a statement, 52-year-old Laurie and fellow producers David Shore and Katie Jacobs said: "We have always imagined House as an enigmatic creature; he should never be the last one to leave the party.
"How much better to disappear before the music stops, while there is still some promise and mystique in the air."

Re: House closes
That sucks, but I have to admit they were running out of internal plot material...
It was brilliant the way they kept the show fresh longer than it it might have been by changing the line up of the supporting "team" cast, which created opportunities for new dynamics, but I kind of saw the handwriting on the wall after they finally did the "House and Cuddy get together" bit, and then Lisa Edelstein left the show...
The fundamentally limiting factor to the show was the fact that the tormented central character could not possibly have any real personal growth, (he could seem to for short periods, but he couldn't really experience it) because if he did then House would have ceased to be House, and the show would have evolved into just another hospital drama....
It's a real tribute to everyone connected with the show; the writers, the supporting cast members, and of course Laurie's brilliant portrayal, that the show was kept as fresh and engaging as it was for so long....

Nothing lasts forever. Lucky for me, I've still got five seasons I haven't seen.
It will be good to have Hugh Laurie free to do other work. Also Robert Sean Leonard. Really great actors shouldn't stagnate too long in one role.
On a related note, that being how much it sucks to bid farewell to a beloved character: I've just watched the last episode of Wire in the Blood and I am pained.
I am also disappointed by how little of Robson Green's other stuff is available to me via Netflix. I think he's a very gifted actor.

Just be thankful he gave up his singing career BSG...bigskygal wrote:I am also disappointed by how little of Robson Green's other stuff is available to me via Netflix. I think he's a very gifted actor.

Why is it that when Miley Cyrus gets naked and licks a hammer it's 'art' and 'edgy' but when I do it I'm 'drunk' and 'banned from the hardware store'?
Re: House closes
House going out of production makes two of my favorites ending this spring as well; The Closer is also slated to finish this spring...On a related note, that being how much it sucks to bid farewell to a beloved character:

Re: House closes
I've only seen first two (or so) complete seasons of The Closer - til Brenda married Fitz? Maybe a little after that.
There is too much good stuff I'd like to watch.

He has a nice voice - I'd read they did an album of covers that sold well in the UK. One of the shows I'd like to see is Soldier, Soldier.
He's actually kind of dishy in that bit. I'm used to him as bumbling Dr. Tony Hill, who while endearing, doesn't seem the 'sexy' type.

lol - He was the "housewives' favourite" sex symbol for a while in the UK at the time of Soldier, Soldier.

Re: House closes
Aw geez; I've just spent a half hour or so watching YouTube interview clips as well as clips of his extreme fishing show and now I've got a damned crush on him! What a sweet, funny bloke he is IRL.
I so wish I had BBC and ITV. In one of the interviews he said he's got something in the works here in the US; something to look forward to, anyway.
eta: Maybe I should tweet him about doing some extreme fly fishing in Montana?

comcast.net/blogs/tv/2012/02/14/hugh-laurie-attacks-rumors-about-the-closure-of-house/?cid=hero_mediaAfter a New York newspaper ran a story alleging that Fox series “House” was coming to an end because actor Hugh Laurie was tired of the show, the actor gave a strong statement to TV Guide that shot down the piece.
In the statement, Laurie took a hard shot at the state of journalism, stating that the quotes that were used in the article were from five years prior and about an entirely different subject.
Here’s a sample of what he wrote…
“Let me state, publicly and unequivocally, that I love my job, and work much harder at it than most journalists work at theirs. As described in the press release, we wanted to preserve some of the character’s mystique. We never wanted to out-stay our welcome. Very possibly, we could have continued with a re-worked formula — House gets a job in a shoe shop and high jinks ensue — but none of us wanted that. We wanted to keep the band together and go out with as much dignity as we could muster.”
Multiple reports came out today that the last episode of the series is set to run on May 21.
You tell 'em Hugh

(I'm going to see if I can find his complete statement)

Re: House closes
This has been an outstanding program for a long time. I have often thought that Laurie MUST be getting tired of it, but I don't think there was any significant deterioration of the scripts this year. With so many programs, after three or four years you can see the writers starting to lose ideas and the plots become absurd.
Between House and NCIS, they constitute quite a bit of all of the TV viewing in my house.

I'm really happy that my daughter would much rather watch well written shows like these (and Monk and Psych) than the "tweener" crap on Nick...
