Impersonating someone for the purpose of satire is one thing; this is something far more sinister ... and I'm sure there is a law of some sort or another against it. With all the money Oprah has, she should be able to find herself at least one good lawyer and sue these assholes for literally everything they've got.
Bill, I believe that for a someone (particularly a celebrity) to prevail in a lawsuit like that, they would have to demonstrate it would be reasonable to believe that a normal person could be fooled into thinking that the impersonation was actually the person being impersonated...

With lines like:

“This is the magical Negro, Oprah Winfrey, asking you to make my fellow negress..."

I think that would be a really big lift...

I'm frankly pretty puzzled as to what exactly the purpose of this robocall was, (unless as I suggested earlier, it was just to try to get publicity for the hate group)

Who was it targeted at? What kind of send list were they working with? Were they sending it to a list where they believed they would reach a large number of fellow racists just so they could all have a good har har har? Surely they could not have possibly believed that something this crudely over the top was actually going to effect any persuadable voter to oppose Abrams (quite the opposite; anyone like that would find the call repellent.)

If you genuinely want to try to persuade voters with a falsehoods, you send out some kind made up smear message ("Stacy Abrams is a member of the Communist Party", "Stacy Abrams has an illegitimate child hidden away she doesn't want anyone to know about", "Stacy Abrams is part of a kiddie porn ring", etc..) not this kind of obviously bogus vulgar caricature stuff that will fool absolutely no one...

This seems more like telephonic trolling or a robo crank call then any kind of real attempt to influence voters...

I think it’s more of stirring up the base “damn the optics” sort of thing. Racists see this as thier last best chance to stir up and unify the “white race”. They want us to see that it is acceptable to say and act “how we really feel” (what they think whites really feel anyway). They aren’t trying to “change” minds they want people to act according to what they know is true but have been cowed by “PC culture” ( or whatever label they are putting in it) into not saying / acting on
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

That epicurious list is mind-blowing - they give 3 forks and 'top pick' status to Mrs. Butterworth's?!?!

Mrs Butterworth's Original ingredients: High Fructose Corn Syrup, Corn Syrup, Water, Salt, Cellulose Gum, Molasses, Natural And Artificial Flavors, Potassium Sorbate (Preservative), Sodium Hexametaphosphate, Citric Acid, Caramel Color, Polysorbate 60

DISGUSTING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hey, I have a couple of local sources for very good quality and reasonably priced REAL MAPLE SYRUP from New England and/or Canada. The kind where the only thing listed on the ingredients label is MAPLE SYRUP, by grade. If you can't find any in your area or can't afford it, let me know and I'll send you some. I can get whatever grade A type you prefer - see below for the new international labeling system to help you decide.

Life is too damned short to be putting high fructose corn syrup on your pancakes, waffles or french toast! BARF!

I tend to use syrup very sparingly, and only with pancakes or waffles, but I agree that pure maple syrup is the best (and IMHO, the only one I will use). I never tried Mrs Buttersworth, but I recall using Log Cabin, and would just rather not use syrup. I recall a friend in college who used Karo syrup (I think a corn syrup) on pancakes, and think in the South there is a sugar syrup called King syrup that is used much in the same way, but I think these are more molasses substitutes than ersatz maple syup.

Re the grading system, I started when the grading was Fancy, A, B, and C (I prefer B), which then became Light, medium amber, dark amber (I don't know what C became but the chart shows it as B). I wish they wouldn't change it again, I was just getting used to the "new" system.

This thread started out so intense that I would never have predicted that it would become so syrupy.

That's how victim wannabees are. They act real sweet until they see an opportunity to portray themselves as victims. Then they turn into vicious vexatious venom spewing butt-hurt opportunists.

Not that I'm accusing anyone here of that. I'm just sayin'.... :D

November of last year, I actually purchased from Amazon, this stuff: "Butternut Mountain Farm, 100% Pure Maple Syrup From Vermont, Grade A, Amber Color, Rich Taste." I have used it up so I can't check the ingredient list.

Somehow, that does not seem the same as buying it locally. My neighborhood super market where I buy most stuff (I admit I also purchased Brooks catsup from Canada, via Amazon) has five different brands of "Maple Syrup" in various sizes and the labels all list various preservatives, flavorings and other chemicals. In my naive definition, real maple syrup is just sap from a Sugar Maple Tree, cooked down and nothing added.

When I was living in Michigan, I was introduced to Elm syrup: metal taps into the trees, a one gallon plastic jug fastened to the tree and connected to the tap. Lots of jugs, lots of time, and lots of cooking down to get about a pint of syrup with a very mild flavor. This was very much not a commercial effort.

The mid-Western standard, the Pork Tenderloin sandwich, is a boneless pork cutlet, about 1/4 pound, pounded thin until it is about twice the size of an ordinary hamburger bun and then breaded and deep fried. Served on a hamburger bun with yellow mustard and perhaps a few dill pickle chips. The bun is just there as a handle while you bite off all the fried pork beyond the bun. Pretty similar to the German schnitzel.

Sadly, a lot of folks in America (& Canada) can't buy 'local' maple syrup because they just aren't blessed with the source.

Image

I don't think a person should have to suffer the indignity of HFCS pancake syrup just because they have the misfortune to reside in the South, Southwest, lower Midwest, Mountain West, West coast. In this case, 'buy local' could be ordering online from a producer in one of the states that makes maple syrup, and giving the USPS/UPS/FedEx some biz, too.

For the record, I never had real maple syrup until I was in my early 20s living in New England; before that I grew up on Log Cabin and I was a 'no syrup thanks' person because I didn't like the flavor of it - it's cloyingly sweet. The first time I had real maple, I was blown away. I've had all the flavors and I tend to prefer the (former) grade A dark amber with the rich maple flavor, but light can be good too. One of my favorite ways to use maple syrup is in coffee in place of sugar - yummy!
