The hypothetical soldier didn't make the statement that if elected, he would desert/leave.
Bosoxgirl made the statement prior to the election as some actors/actresses have said in the past but have not fled the country when their "reason to leave" was elected. In that context I was replying.
First of all, I'm not sure any rule requires that candidate always support the eventual winner.
There are states where candidates can be disqualified from being on the primary ballot if they announce they wont support the eventual nominee in the general election. (A few months ago, Bush was considering announcing he wouldn't support Trump, and did not do so for this reason.)
What will happen if Trump actually becomes the nominee is another matter.
True, but wouldn't it be sufficient if they remained silent and didn't declare either way? That's what I thought they were doing. Or they could have said something like "We're republicans and will live up to our responsibility to the party". That could have set Trump off into a dither, but still kept them on the ballot.

Do you think this might be a special case.

I said I would if Dubya was reelected, but for various reasons, I wasn't really free to walk away from the USA. Now considering certain recent changes in my life, I don't feel I am limited from taking that step any longer. I've downsized to a 5x5 storage locker plus my vehicle, both of which could live at my cousin's easily enough so I'd have no expenses in that regard. I have no fewer than a half dozen people who've begged to be a foster home for my sweetheart blind dog if ever necessary, so that's not a huge concern - except that I would miss her terribly. But I've ALWAYS wanted to live/work abroad, and I've just made the commitment to start doing all the things I've always wanted to do . . . so the rise of the Trumpanzees to power, should it occur, would provide the perfect excuse to get me gone.
But don't worry oldr, I'd still post here - after all it's an international board.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Well BSG, if you just work abroad, and keep your US citizenship and pay US taxes, I don't think it qualifies as leaving. Indeed, I would think Trump would be glad to have the political opposition do that--keeping their money while not having ro see thm very often.
Drumpf said one thing yesterday I found amusing...
He said that the reason you're seeing so much more raucous behavior at his rallies than at any other candidates' rallies, (recently multiple brawls and fist fights have been erupting between Trumpanzees and Trump opponents at Trumpty events) is because his crowds are so much larger...
So the acrimony and violence is not a result of his hateful and incendiary message and tone, and the passion and anger it whips up both among supporters and opponents...
No, it's all about crowd size...
That must be why there were so many fistfights and screaming matches at Pope Francis' events when he was here...
