This won't have a good impact on Moore's turnout...

Shelby is the most popular politician in the state, and won re-election in 2016 with a higher percentage of the vote than Trump received:
Alabama Sen. Shelby: 'I couldn't vote for Roy Moore'

Washington (CNN)Sen. Richard Shelby says he wants a Republican elected to the Senate on Tuesday to represent Alabama, but that he didn't vote for GOP candidate Roy Moore in the special election.

The Alabama Republican said he's already cast his ballot, and that he chose a write-in candidate.

"I'd rather see the Republican win, but I'd rather see a Republican write-in. I couldn't vote for Roy Moore. I didn't vote for Roy Moore," Shelby told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."

Moore has been accused of pursuing sexual relationships with teenagers when he was in his 30s. In some cases, the women who have come forward about the relationships have alleged sexual abuse or assault. Moore has denied all the allegations.

Shelby said in November that he would probably write-in a candidate instead of casting a vote for Moore.

The Alabama senator said he has no reason not to believe the women who have come forward, adding that where there's "a lot of smoke, there's got to be some fire somewhere."

"(W)e call it a tipping point," Shelby said. "I think, so many accusations, so many cuts, so many drip, drip, drip -- when it got to the 14-year-old's story, that was enough for me. I said I can't vote for Roy Moore."

Shelby said on "State of the Union" that he's not sure who will win the close election race in Alabama, but he added that "the state of Alabama deserves better" than Moore.

I would have liked to have seen more attention to his peers--his fellow Alabama judges who kicked him off the state supreme court.
"What he did 30 years ago" and his "recent record" both reflect exactly who Roy Moore is: a man who thinks himself above the law and a law unto himself, putting his own ego and gratification before the needs and interests of anyone else and willing to use whatever power he has to control and manipulate those who have less.

Fuck that guy and the horse he rides around on.

Heigh! Don’t blame the poor horse!

Sorry Sue and BSG, but your recent posts would be great motivators to get out the vote for Moore. Fear of outsiders--be they from the Middle East, Ivy League Universities, Lieberal NY Times, or Scientists who just don't take the Bible seriously) drive the Moore and the Trump voter.

Yes - and the problem with deviating the argument to his (mis)conduct with girls 30-some years ago, is that it's a distraction from what should be the central argument - that based on his own writings and recent behavior, Moore is totally unsuited to being a senator. He purports to be a believer in the Constitution but clearly he is not. Even if by some magic it could be proved that all those women are lying (and don't get me wrong - I believe them) it would not change my opinion about his being wrong for Alabama and wrong for the country.

I am not saying that it's wrong for these things to be brought up - of course it's not - and if it sways enough voters, then so be it. Nonetheless, it's a distraction. The same goes for Trump and the Access Hollywood tape; and Sarah Palin and her apparent belief that Africa is just another country 'over there' somewhere: the tape could be a fake and Palin could be a geography mastermind, but those two are still beyond any sense of normal.

I'd rather see the Republican win, but I'd rather see a Republican write-in. I couldn't vote for Roy Moore. I didn't vote for Roy Moore," Shelby told CNN's Jake Tapper on "State of the Union."
If Repug voters followed this 'advice' I could see it splitting the vote enough to give Jones the win. I can't help but feel Shelby's statement allows him to save face without him appearing to support a low down, dirty, Democrat.

If Moore wins... I'm moving to Canada.

I predict Moore wins by a landslide. Alabama is a deeply GOP state. What counts is who counts the votes. That part of this special election is rigged.

If it is actually close, the recount will be a farce.

So apparently only 43% of Alabamians polled at the voting booths are self-identifying as Republicans, something the pundits are calling very significant, a sign of Trump’s negative effect in a conservative state.

Thoughts, LJ?

That may be because some of the respondents don't want to identify themselves with the "Republican establishment", (which they dislike about as much as they dislike the Democrats) not necessarily because they don't identify with Moore or Trump...

The early exit poll results overall are not encouraging...

The worst number, is that by a margin of 55% to 40%, those polled are saying that the Moore sexual accusations were not a "major factor" in their vote...

The margin of those who believe the allegations versus those who don't is only 49% to 45%...

It has to be said that this is based on exit polling that was done with 3 hours of voting left, and that also the polling is only going to be as good as the model for the selection mix of the sampled polling locations (which is a very big if in this election)

But if those results are an accurate reflection of the voters who turned out, (again, a fairly substantial "if") Moore is almost certain to win...

I was glad to see this...

I'm sure Vlad is a Roy fan:

The Department of Homeland Security is keeping its eye on Alabama's special U.S. Senate election.

The agency's top infrastructure and cybersecurity official says a federal protective security adviser and a cybersecurity adviser are in the capital city of Montgomery and working "side by side" with state government officials in case issues arise.

Christopher Krebs says he's not aware of any specific threats. But he says DHS has been working with the state "for quite some time" to prepare for any issues.

It's part of a larger effort to better share threat information and provide technical support after DHS concluded Russian government hackers targeted election systems in 21 states last year.

Krebs says: "We learned our lessons last year."

MSNBC is reporting that the Senate has scheduled a meeting for tomorrow AM to discuss how to handle a Moore win.

The very early votes coming in look encouraging, but it's way too early to draw any conclusions....

Here's a link for the running totals and where the votes are coming in across the state:

For some reason, the vote totals on MSNBC and CNN are running behind the totals on the NYT link...(But FOX has the most current NYT numbers...go figure...)

In looking a the interactive map of Alabama on the NYT site, I think at this point, Jones' chances are excellent. (You can see the vote totals and number of precincts reporting in each county by scrolling your mouse over them)

Currently Moore is ahead overall by 52.1% to 46.6%. But when you look at where the votes remaining to come in, There are a lot more votes to be had where Jones is strong, as opposed to Moore's strongest areas.

The Globe has the gap closing. I don’t think it will be enough though.

Now it’s getting interesting. The gap is down to 10,000 votes with 80% of the precincts reporting.

When you look at where the votes are left, (especially in Mobile, Montgomery, and Birmingham, where Jones is running between 65-75%) I will be very surprised if Jones doesn't win...

Moore's strongholds are pretty much tapped out; at one point he was up by more than 50,000 votes, and he's been on a steady downward slide ever since...
