After putting this off repeatedly, I finally went through this ordeal last spring...(unlike some folks, I didn't feel the need to give a blow by blow sharing...

All done, now its just a case of waiting for the biopsy results from the bits of my insides he carved out.

Dad was awake for his, I was awake for mine. I didn't mind, it was uncomfortable but I'd rather that than the additional risk of anaesthetic.

They don't put you to sleep. They give you a drug (or combination) that makes most people not remember what just happened.
In @W's case they probably hit her over the head with a mallet just before the procedure.

If they did it private, they may have had the wrong hole....

After having the procedure described to me, it would never have occurred to me to have it without anesthesia...
