Re: Fuck off
I like the stores of Francine Rivers and Bernard Cornwall; I am sure that many here consider it crap. Do you all think I give damn? If we all thought alike this place would be as lonely as a ghost town.
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

Re: Fuck off
I don't know Francine Rivers but have read a lot of Bernard Cornwall. If there are people who consider his writing "crap", then it is probably because they don't like his stories. He writes honestly and well, whether one likes his stories or not.
The story that started this thread (once upon a time) had the subject line (once upon a time), "Everybody needs to read this". So I read it. The likelihood is that I would had dismissed it with a shrug and said nothing if not for the closing. In response to the soldier's expectation of being reunited with loved ones in heaven, the author has St. Peter endorsing Buddha, Lao Tse and others as if they are determinative gods and "it's up to them". That's crap (no matter what one believes) because the entire idea is against Buddhism, is far from what Lao Tse would ever endorse and so on. Each of the names mentioned is antithetical to the other according to their own teachings.
This relativistic "thinking" (which in fact is mere Oprahism) is both wrong and ridiculous. "Poor soldier" is actually what I thought about that.
lib, I don't think of you at all except when I read something you've posted - such as, now.

Anyone can have an off day, but only an habitual asshole can have an "on" day. Give the boy some props for being his better self. Maybe this is the start of a new "Joe Guy"; why not? If the magnetic field of the entire earth can reverse, so can he.

Here you are Mr. Meade; I don’t know if you are into women writers, but it is a good story. You might want to check it out.
As for myself I don’t care if the author is male, female, bisexual, asexual or any variety of furenor ( foreigner ), a good yard is a good yard.
It doesn’t bother me to share the fact that I like girly stories. A real man likes what he likes and doesn’t care what others think. Does a real man eat quiche? He does if that is what he wants. I also like a good heroic war story.

Bridge to Haven
by Francine Rivers (Goodreads Author)
4.04 · Rating Details · 10,658 Ratings · 894 Reviews
To those who matter in 1950s Hollywood, Lena Scott is the hottest rising star to hit the silver screen since Marilyn Monroe. Few know her real name is Abra. Even fewer know the price she's paid to finally feel like she's somebody.
To Pastor Ezekiel Freeman, Abra will always be the little girl who stole his heart the night he found her, a wailing newborn abandoned under a bridge on the outskirts of Haven. Zeke and his son, Joshua--Abra's closest friend--watch her grow into an exotic beauty. But Zeke knows the circumstances surrounding her birth etched scars deep in her heart, scars that leave her vulnerable to a fast-talking bad boy who proclaims his love and lures her to Tinseltown.
Hollywood feels like a million miles from Haven, and naive Abra quickly learns what's expected of an ambitious girl with stars in her eyes. But fame comes at an awful price. She has burned every bridge to get exactly what she thought she wanted. Now, all she wants is a way back home.
In this riveting and highly anticipated tale of temptation, grace, and unconditional love, "New York Times" best-selling author Francine Rivers delivers big-canvas storytelling at its very best.
Soon, I’ll post my farewell message. The end is starting to get close. There are many misconceptions about me, and before I go, to live with my ancestors on the steppes, I want to set the record straight.

Re: Fuck off
Thanks, lib. I might have read it but you helpfully provided the synopsis that convinced me to not bother. Not my kind of story. Not into bosom-heavers, literary-wise. Mind, I did wonder if she burned every bridge in the hope that she'd destroy the one under which she'd been abandoned.

Re: Fuck off
Everyone has their own tastes in reading, music, movies, TV, etc., and many of us recommend them here from time to time because we think that others might enjoy them. No one does it to invite negative opinions, but sometimes other posters will share their dislike for our preferences. No one gets into a snit about it, nor would anyone expect someone who does not share their tastes to muzzle themselves. We're all big boys and girls; our worldview will not collapse if our choices of prose do not inspire the same enthusiasm in others as they do in us.Joe Guy wrote:I don't blame Jarlaxle one bit for being pissed off. I've recommended stuff that others have derided as pure dreck, others have recommended stuff that I've mocked and ridiculed...(the difference of course being that I'm right...
But that's par for the course around here, and as Scooter correctly points out, "we're all big boys and girls"...
Not a delicate young school child offering their first opinions in the bunch...
In fact most of us have been interacting with each other for going on 20 years, (in some cases, with the old Cafe Darte crowd, more than 20 years)
So by now it should be apparent to anyone participating here that we're all a bunch of blunt speaking assholes...

Which is exactly why I believe "Fuck Off" was an appropriate response to all the negative commenters.Lord Jim wrote:But that's par for the course around here, and as Scooter correctly points out, "we're all big boys and girls"...
