A good point. When we lived in Portland the length of the day varied a LOT more than Calif. Good for the fall color. Not so much for adapting human schedules to.

" Lead ,follow or get the heck out of the way" Kudos ,for the left coasters,Who in the world was that garbage supposed to help anyway? when you spend 14 or more hours away from home each day as I used too ,its a big liability and I have never talked to a farmer that liked it ,I expect it has caused a lot of "nodding off " accidents on the highway ,want more daylight ? simple .get up earlier, dont try to make everybody else accomodate you .

I'm fine with that. I'd be fine with sunrise at 4am.Scooter wrote:We've had this discussion before - not changing time is fine in lower latitudes, but in higher ones, unless you want the sun coming up at 4AM in the summer or 9AM in the winter, you need to change the time in the fall and spring.

Frist DST, then we can do away with time zones--everyone on GMT. If the sun rises at midnight, too damn bad.

Sounds like a Chinese plot to me, only I think they use Beijing time.Big RR wrote:Frist DST, then we can do away with time zones--everyone on GMT. If the sun rises at midnight, too damn bad.

Well, it is just a number. We can choose to invest it with whatever importance we wish.

I volunteer at local charities (but that's another story).
I care due to the fact that it involves my fellow Californians (who wish to scrap DST altogether).

I haven't seen any recent polling on this Dale, (though I did manage to find one from 1948 that supports your position: http://ucdata.berkeley.edu/pubs/CalPolls/101.pdfmy fellow Californians (who wish to scrap DST altogether).
Here in 'Frisco, on most days during what we laughingly refer to as "summer", about the only sunshine we see comes during a precious few hours in the late afternoon and early evening...
I'm not so sure that a lot of people in this burg would want to cut that by an hour...
And in SoCal, I would expect the opposition to be even stronger...
Why would legions of sun worshiping beach-goers vote to give themselves an hour less of warm sunny beach time?
It seems counter-intuitive...
On the other hand, I imagine it would be pretty popular with muggers, pickpockets and car thieves...
They do their best work in the dark...

Two things about that:
First, it's not a scientific sampling poll; it's just a bunch of people voting on the internet...(and voting as many times as they'd like, and they may not even all be Californians) so it's not a statistically valid predictor of actual voter preferences...
Second, even allowing for that, let's look at those numbers:
While only 47% want to keep PST...
So "keep PST" as a go-it-alone idea loses, 50-47....
As for the comments from the people on that page...
What a bunch of whiners...
Dudes, if having to change your clocks by one hour twice a year is the worst thing in your lives, you are way ahead of the game...Here's what I have to say to you:

Second, even allowing for that, let's look at those numbers:
What I see there is that a total of 50% either want DST year 'round, want to keep things the way they are, or only want to drop DST if the rest of the country does....let's remain on Pacific Standard Time. 47% (3748)
let's stay on daylight saving time. 33% (2571)
we should change clocks twice yearly. 10% (757)
unless the rest of the country changes. 7% (519)
I don't have time for this question. 4% (306)

Re: I REALLY WANT THIS BILL TO PASS IN SACTO!
To be clear, it's not that I want to scrap DST as long as it's DST until CA actually executes someone on death row.let's remain on Pacific Standard Time. 47% (3748)
let's stay on daylight saving time. 33% (2571)
You and I are on the same side, the majority.
(At first I wanted to scrap DST, upon further reflection realized I'm tired of this silly clock nonsense)

[anal retentive rant]
The only way to maximize your amount of time the sun is in the sky is to head north to near the arctic circle and arrive on June 20/21 then slowly head south until you are near the antarctic circle on December 20/21.
[/anal retentive rant]

There is no "hour more" nor "hour less" of sunny beach time be it PDT or PST (or C D/S T or E D/S T). The amount of time the sun is up over the eastern horizon and not down past the western horizon is the same for that day. The only change made is what we call the moment in time when it peaks out from over the eastern horizon. (or conversly when it goes down past the western horizon). Why would legions of sun worshiping beach-goers vote to give themselves an hour less of warm sunny beach time?

Except that by foregoing DST, that hour occurs in the VERY early morning, when no one but the roosters are awake, instead of in the evening, when people could actually take advantage of it.

Re: I REALLY WANT THIS BILL TO PASS IN SACTO!
I'm up at 5-5:30am most days.
6am - 7am on the weekends
you know it's all about me.
I know that when we flip to DST in the spring, what once was a sunny commute turns into a dark commute. Then we get to go through the sunrise times during the drive once again a few weeks later. Sunlight at the correct angle makes everyone think the brakelights are on on the car in front of you. Then we really hit the brakes and it's playing bumper cars again.
