Overused Useless Words Pissing Me Off Again....

Let's all exercise some mindfulness here.

No doubt an homage to the very near future World Series winners, the AL Boston Red Sox.wesw wrote:this thread is wicked good.

Don't be dissin' tradition!
(From what I've learned in my research of the same question, Sox came about because it fit into newspaper headlines better - in Chicago, when they were the White Stockings. When the owner of the Boston team decided to make them Sox, he dove right in adopting that moniker. If you can find a different answer, I'm more than happy to learn it - I'm not an expert on everything, but I do know how to work the research machine.)

No, that's my recollection as well; I believe the red sox were previously called the red stockings (and the Brookly Dodgers were the Taxi Dodgers--at least per the Ken Burns Baseball miniseries).

Socks or sox, the last refuge of an unimaginative gift buyer.

Especially because people don't wear ties very much nowadays.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Here I though the Brooklyn Dodgers were Trolly Dodgers, not taxis.
And by the by, the Kansas City, Missouri NFL team in spite of the logo, are named after Mayor H. Roe Bartle who organized the effort to get the team into the town. He was always known as 'Chief'

Well BP, you may well be right; I just checked and it's what wiki shows. But I could have sworn that the documentary said taxi Dodgers.
As for the Chiefs, was the logo always used or did this come later? That's an interesting bit of trivia. I guess if Perry White helped bring them to KC they wouldn't be the Chiefs.

They should have kept their original name just to mess with the geographically challenged.Burning Petard wrote: And by the by, the Kansas City, Missouri NFL team in spite of the logo, are named after Mayor H. Roe Bartle who organized the effort to get the team into the town.

Like the Utah Jazz? I know it isn't geographical per se, but it only made sense when it was New Orleans.
