Funny that, as the two friends of mine who have emigrated to NZ with their partner are a teacher (and care worker wife,) and an ambulance paramedic (both.) Neither couple are wealthy, and all are working folk.

Me and Hen considered retiring to NZ, as she can get permanent residency via her late father who was a Kiwi.

Probably easier for them to get a visa than an American.

I've considered New Zealand, but I don't think I could get past the language barrier.

I would love to go to New Zealand, but it’s the escape of the wealthy, not the working folk. Full of millionaire and billionaire bunkers, I understand. I suppose I could go on a travel visa and overstay - but I want to emigrate with my border collie, so I really need to go legit.

I really think I’m leaning toward Micronesia. I would like to live a few years on an island that is about to disappear forever.

Australia is another country where the cost of living is significantly higher than the US, from the research I’ve done. Additionally to secure a work visa you have to have a skill that is needed in Australia and there are age limits - they aren’t looking to import a lot of people fast approaching retirement age, for obvious reasons.

Anyway I want to go someplace a lot different from where I’ve lived all my life to this point. I don’t think that Australia is that. I’m not really interested in moving to a country that is even more majority white European ethnic heritage than the USA, and has its own serious issues with racism and sexism.

I want the experience of living someplace where I am in the minority as a white person. Ideally someplace my American dollars income would go farther than here, not less far. And frankly someplace less swept up in late stage capitalism.

If you have a desirable skill and ARE YOUNG ENOUGH. Skilled worker visas cut off at age 56, no exceptions.

And NO, despite a plethora of propaganda to the contrary, undocumented immigrants do not get loads of social services. They are eligible for almost nothing beyond emergency medical care under EMTALA and emergency Medicaid, despite paying lots and lots of taxes to support the programs they can’t use.
