Apparently City Hall is intent on having the last word.

The City of Toronto has announced a pilot project, in order to "reduce confusion" about where it is or is not legal to park. Curbs will be painted red to identify areas where it is never legal to park, stop or stand. I can identify that three of the curbs to be painted as part of the pilot are located in front of fire hydrants that are set well back from the road, including the fire hydrant at which I was ticketed and which ticket was thrown out when I went to court.

But here's the thing - the red paint does not serve merely to identify areas where it is illegal to park under the existing parking by-law. The by-law is being amended to make it an offence to park anywhere that is marked by red paint. So the city's response to the decision in my court case, and probably in several others involving similarly placed fire hydrants, is to pass a new law making it illegal to park in those areas regardless.

Oh yeah, and the red painted curbs, supposedly intended to warn motorists against parking there? Where I got my ticket, they will be barely visible because of large concrete planters that line the sidewalk and come almost to the edge of the curb. So the cash grab will continue on.

It will never go away. Do you guys have red light cameras yet? That's a really big cash grab.

We have red light cameras, but the intersections they are installed at are all clearly signed. I think in that case they have really tried to focus on intersections that see a lot of accidents, and from what I have seen of the data they have been successful in reducing serious accidents and injury.

ETA - the other thing, I'm not sure how they operate in other places, but here the camera is not activated unless the light is red when the car enters the intersection. So you're not going to get dinged for entering the intersection on a yellow and not making it across before the light turns red.

Around here there have been accusations that they lowered the "yellow" light time on the corners they put the cameras on (I have no idea if they did or not) and they did not put signs up on those either. They say they are going to put signs up saying there is a camera, but I have to see them on the intersections around my house. From what I hear, most tickets are to people not making a full stop before making the right on red.

Not signing them and fooling around with the signal timing is wrong, but I have no sympathy for anyone caught improperly turning right on a red. I don't know how many accidents it causes, but far too often I see people performing that maneuver without regard for the requirement that the way must be clear, forcing cars travelling with the green to brake in order to avoid hitting them, not even giving way to pedestrians trying to cross the street.

Only if there is other traffic present. Prosecuting a rolling stop on a clear and open and lighted intersection in the middle of the night serves no purpose.

I agree. I have found, especially on my motorcycle, that people make right turns expect to be able to turn right without any knid of stop. I ride the service road of the Long Island Expressway often and people coming out of sidestreets almost never stop. usually they are half braking then floor it to pull out ahead of me, even if I am almost on top of them.

ETA
I usually ride the left lane, but seems no one can turn their cars now-a-days into the right most lane. They need two lanes to complete a right hand turn.

Ah, yes, parking enforcement. The same people who will happily ticket you a dozen times for exceeding the time limit only once.

I was just in the UK and had to get some documents endorsed by a Notary Public (50 blood pounds!) whose office is in her home, a quiet street in Harrow. I carefully checked and parking was permitted except for 11a.m. to noon. Had to wait in the Notary's living room for a bit until she got home; then the fun of getting documents signed and notarized and chatting a bit. Went to leave and there's the bloody warden at 11:02 writing me up and that was another 55 bloody pounds (110 if you want to pay in two weeks' time) down the drain. He sped off on his little moped thing, singing and laughing.

My wife's a NY state notary and she does not charge (it's not even worth it)

From Here
May a notary public charge for administering an oath or affirmation or for taking an acknowledgment or proof or execution?

A notary public may charge a fee of $2.00 for administering an oath or affirmation or for taking an acknowledgment or proof of execution. Unless otherwise authorized by law, a notarial fee may not exceed this amount.
Don't know the exchange rate. :shrug

Would that those limits applied here. Supposedly if one can get to city hall there are officials authorized to take oaths who will do it for free. But I can recall once being pressed for time and unable to get a hold of any of my lawyer friends who could have done it, and the notary up the street charged me $60. Complete rip off.

Every time I have needed a notary, I have gone to a bank...never been charged. The library also has one here & also does not charge...though when I went there, I "paid" them by donating a copier-paper box full of books. :)

The laws on notary charges must vary from state to state. Here in California a notary can only charge up to $10.00 if you go to them.

But if they travel to come to you they can charge a lot more. I don't know if there is a maximum.

Because of our schedules we have had real estate closings at our home in the evening. The Notary usually charges $100.00, pretty reasonable. We usually offer her (so far they've all been 'her') a glass of wine at the end. Everyone winds up happy.
