Right.  Delivered the coup de grâce to a production company that at one time could literally do no wrong, made an entire genre of films effectively unmakeable from then on, and pretty well killed an A-list actress' career.

Here's a second quote:
Congratulations, madam.  There's another town you've destroyed.

And Crackpot has it.

Supposedly included in the Guinness Book of Records holder for the biggest bomb in history (once adjusted for inflation), this is the film that ultimate bankrupted Carolco, made pirate movies a no-go in Hollywood (sorry, despite their success I do not consider Disney's 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise to be true pirate movies as there is too much fantasy and other far-fetched elements in them), and effectively turned Geena Davis into a 'where are they now?' topic.

From Wikipedia:
Carolco Pictures, Inc. was an American independent motion picture production company that, within a decade, went from producing such blockbuster successes as "Terminator 2: Judgment Day", "Total Recall", "Basic Instinct", and the first three films of the Rambo series to being bankrupted by box office bombs such as "Cutthroat Island" and "Showgirls".
Originally set to have Michael Douglas playing opposite Geena Davis, he dropped out after it became apparent to him that the director (Renny Harlin, Davis' husband) was expanding her role at the expense of his own.  He was replaced with the less-bankable Matthew Modine, as it was still thought that the movie could be sold on its production values and the star power of Davis' name.  They were wrong.

Somewhat obscure movie. An homage to an earlier body of work

R T F: I can imagine and you must be thankful you didn't go blind.

Davis drew strong ratings in this series last year, which has been renewed for a second season. She's making a bit of a comeback, then. I watched the series and found it to be very entertaining, very good acting & production values, worth watching if you're into creepy/scary.

This is not ringing any bells for me, but based on the dialogue that's been quoted , I would guess that this is one of those movies where the main characters are juvenile imbeciles, and one is supposed to be amused by their idiotic antics...

Something like Dumb and Dumber, though I don't think it's that particular movie...

LJ, you're probably right. I often think that I'm "dumb and dumber" but that would be devaluing my currency. Apparently all my best efforts -- so far -- have been for naught. I'm going to let others chime in before I take another stab at it. I bet I'm close, though.

It is actually an homage to a "genre" (I don't know if that's the proper term) you're quite fond of. Unfortunately the pacing of the jokes is the biggest hint and that doesn't translate.
