Can a family that is living on their credit card be said to be doing great? The bill will come due someday.
I'm surprised that you extract from that any coherent argument about the need for a living wage, or naughty capitalists flogging the poor back into the mines or indeed anything that you've addressed (agreeably to me for the most part).

I also fail to understand that you drew from my shot at liberty's "thought process" this:
Let’s browbeat those lazy spendthrift good-for-nothings who dare to want roses to go with their bread, in the wealthiest country in the history of the world.
The only one being brow-beaten (and it needed a low blow) was lib.
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

I’m not reading liberty’s posts and doing so isn’t required - the context of Meade’s assertion is self contained in HIS post, and that is all I’m responding to. The idea that poor Americans aren’t poor enough to complain compared to the poor somewhere in Africa (or any other place that suffers poverty) or that Americans are using their credit cards for more than keeping themselves above bread and gruel - those are the tired conservative capitalist arguments that I’m railing against. Those arguments about the poor in America date back to Reagan times and are only related to MAGA in that it’s the same vote-against-your-interests persuasion that Reagan used on citizens back then and that Trump is using again today. It’s the same old tired defense of the rich and status quo.

Liberty is full of shit most of the time which is why I don’t read him. However, even persons who are largely full of shit can hit on a truth now and then - and the truth of the massive income inequality in this country that has Americans living on credit cards both literal and metaphorical is critical to who gets elected in 2020 and beyond. How we talk about it, the tropes utilized and the attitudes expressed towards those who struggle to get ahead in any meaningful fashion in this brave new economy really, really matters. I will always bristle at the suggestion that people struggling in the richest country ever to exist just don’t know how good they have it.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.

Update:

Talking with older daughter today about COVID-19 and related subjects.

She sees no need to wear a mask or have any worries about the pandemic.

She values "rights" more than public safety it seems.

Your collective inability to acknowledge this obvious truth makes you all look like fools.

I'm pretty sure that the U.S. Constitution doesn't give ANYBODY the "right " to infect another person with a potentially fatal disease.
(You just might want to mention that to her.)
People who are wrong are just as sure they're right as people who are right. The only difference is, they're wrong.

You should tell her that the United States Constitution is a constant balance of the rights of the individual versus the rights of the community. In this instance, if she doesn’t care about protecting herself, she should act for the good of her community.

But, as Sue likes to say, we don’t legislate stupid.

I asked her if she wore a seatbelt while driving.

The "rights" vs. "responsibility".

I believe that might have made a slight indention into her Trumpian logic.

I will not lose hope!
