Random House Digital, Inc., Sep 1, 2001 - History - 175 pages
From one of our greatest historians, a magnificent reckoning with the modern world's most fateful idea. With astonishing authority and clarity, Richard Pipes has fused a lifetime's scholarship into a single focused history of Communism, from its hopeful birth as a theory to its miserable death as a practice. At its heart, the book is a history of the Soviet Union, the most comprehensive reorganization of human society ever attempted by a nation-state. Drawing on much new information, Richard Pipesexplains the countryis evolution from the 1917 revolution to the Great Terror and World War II, global expansion and the Cold War chess match with the United States, and the regime's decline and ultimate collapse. There is no more dramatic story in modern history, nor one more crucial to master, than that of how the writing and agitation of two mid-nineteenth-century European thinkers named Marx and Engels led to a great and terrible world religion that brought down a mighty empire, consumed the world in conflict, and left in its wake a devastation whose full costs can only now be tabulated.

I expected to be placed in an air force combat position such as security police, forward air control, pararescue or E.O.D. I would have liked dog handler. I had heard about the dog Nemo and was highly impressed. “SFB” is sad I didn’t end up in E.O.D.

Been listening to the WTF podcast lately and was once again reminded on how hard it is not to laugh when you're not supposed to. The very act of stifling laughter just makes it that much worse.

I've been listening to "The Bugle" podcast. Can be hit or miss, but can be bloody funny. The humour may be a bit too Brit for you foriegners.

Listening to old radio shows does sometimes make the mouth hang open. The true crime stuff especially (well the sci-fi stuff all has Star Trek syndrome amazingly progressive yet stunningly sexist) I expected the anti commie stuff given the time frame we're dealing with but I was shocked to hear the term "wetback" used as normal conversation fare.

If you are enjoying podcasts C-P, you should look into audiobooks too.

I've come to the conclusion from my recent diet of science fiction from the 50s and 60s that the future will be extraordinarily sexist.

Yes, but will we have jetpacks and flying cars? I was promised jetpacks and flying cars.

(We finally got the "videophones" I was promised at the Worlds Fair in 1963, although it took like 45 freakin' years.)
GAH!

Videophones have Been around since the early 90's (at latest) flying cars the same (prohibitively expensive) jet packs have been around since the 50's no one will market them because they don't want to be liable for when the fuel runs out.
