0145: In New York, though, reports continue to come in thick and fast. Three feet of water are said to be sloshing through the floor of the New York Stock Exchange - which was closed earlier on Monday.
I only hope Sue is safe...

Doing just fine here so far. Have a few large trees down, but haven't lost electricity more than a few blinks or had any flooding in this neighborhood as far as I can see. The top 20 feet of a 40 or 50-foot maple snapped off and grazed our back screen porch, but didn't cause any actual damage, landing mostly in the iris bed; a large tree on the cul-de-sac uprooted, taking out some of the sidewalk, and is now laying across the next-door neighbors driveway and out into the street. I haven't left the house today, taking the opportunity to do some cleaning and play Monopoly with the kids. A friend sent some pix from Atlantic City, and they look to have about two feet or so of water in the street by the Convention Center. The wind is starting to pick up again now, seems louder than this afternoon; I expect we'll lose more trees before it's over -- the ones that came down this afternoon were not even on my radar as possible casualties. I've got my eye on a huge rotting oak by the chicken coop -- I'm hoping it falls on the neighbor's house behind us.

ETA:

Having managed to avoid going to court today (for a pointless status conference), I am now informed that the courts and my office will be closed again tomorrow. I'm starting to like this storm a lot.

So glad all is ok, hope it stays that way!

It's almost quiet here, then a random gust shakes the house. But I can see the moon now. Will walk around in the morning, but I think we came through fine, thanks to whatever diety you chose to thank!

Can Jarl and oldr and BigRR and anyone else in the mid-atlantic/northeast check in now please...

If Sue's got power, she's lucky...

I saw Christie on Morning Joe a little while ago, and he said there are a million more households in New Jersey without power than was the case after Irene....

I wonder if the salt in the storm surge is going to damage a lot of landscaping, and how far inland?

I wonder how soon the various home insurance companies will be visited by lynch mobs when homeowners discover how much is NOT covered by their policies.

taking the opportunity to do some cleaning and play Monopoly
I can just imagine what playing Monopoly with Sue must be like:

"Wait a minute buddy, what do you think you're doing putting a hotel on Marvin Gardens? First of all, it's zoned residential, and second, the electrical wiring isn't up to code. Here's a court injunction preventing you from building." :P

To Meade's point, my homeowner's policy has always excluded flood damage. When we took out a line of credit a few years ago, the bank insisted that we get flood insurance (which was quite cheap). Ain't using the line of credit, but still carrying the flood insurance. Another bit of baggage.

I'm required to have flood insurance where I live and it is not cheap at all. Although I have a less expensive policy because my home is on pilings and I have no basement, thus less susceptible to flood.

However, its the homeowners insurers that are the ridiculous interpreters of the policies. I had to litigate with mine after the huge N'oreaster we had that caused so much damage (more to my neighborhood than either Irene or Sandy). You might be surprised how narrowly the wind coverage (and pretty much all coverage) is interpreted. And because I have flood insurance too, the adjusters kept on trying to push coverage back on each other -- a true hot potato.

Yeah - they have flood maps. If you live on the top of a nice big hill flood insurance is cheap (if you could ever claim everyone else would be dead so . . .). OTOH if you live where Guin does... chances are much better for getting wetter and the premiums are way above flood level.

I wonder if some policyholders will find that flood/damage caused by hurricanes is excluded? Then begins the argument as to when is a hurricane not a hurricane? Or rather, when did Sandy become a Julian?
