A story about somebody who is in the country illegally who has been charged with murdering a college student...

This just really sucks; I’ve been following the case and expected them to find her body, but my heart just sank when they announced it was an undocumented immigrant - that’s going to be played so hard at the midterms. I wish the creepy pig farmer had been the perp.

I wonder, even, what the case against the accused actually is; just a few days ago the FBI was insinuating she was alive somewhere. I hope they aren’t railroading an innocent ‘illegal’; it wouldn’t be the first time.

(CNN)Authorities had been looking for Mollie Tibbetts, a 20-year-old Iowa student who disappeared while jogging, for weeks when they found home surveillance video that showed a car following a woman running.

After watching it for hours, investigators found clues that led them to an undocumented immigrant, who on Tuesday led them to a leaf-covered body in a cornfield.

Based on an interview with the suspect, Cristhian Bahena Rivera, 24, and after examining the clothes at the scene, authorities arrested Rivera and filed first-degree murder charges against him.

It is unclear why Rivera killed Tibbetts, said Rick Rahn, special agent in charge at the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation.

"I can't really speak to you about the motive," Rahn said. "I can just tell you it seems that he followed her and seemed to be drawn to her on that particular day and for whatever reason he chose to abduct her."

An autopsy to determine when and how the woman died is planned for Wednesday.

The suspect is an undocumented immigrant who authorities believe has been in the area for four to seven years, Rahn said. Charges were filed in district court in Poweshiek County and bail was set at $1 million.

Here's a crazy thought ... Mollie Tibbetts was a victim of Trump's "MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN" policies.  Let us face it, Trump's vision of a "Great America" is a country run on the Golden Rule — "whoever has the gold makes the rules" — just so long as it is white male types holding the gold; where women, minorities, and immigrants knew their place (and stayed there); where patriotism and jingoism were indistinguishable; and where the ends always justified the means.

So Trump's people put out a series of hits — a crackpot in a sniper's post opening fire on a music festival, for example, or a whack-job shooting up a gay nightclub, or senseless assaults of children while (supposedly) safe at school.  Or an undocumented alien to abduct and murder, seemingly at random, the quintessential (white) girl next door.  As BSG said, "Trump now has a token Mexican immigrant rapist to refer to at his blood rallies" — his own personal Willie Horton.

Sure it sounds nuts.  Just as nuts as when Nero blamed the Christians for the fires that devastated Rome, or the accusations leveled against dissenters, boat-rockers, and others by Torquemada's Inquisition, or when Hitler blamed the Jews for all of Germany's woes during the first half of the 20th century ..... and we all know how those played out.

I heard Cohen's lawyer this morning in NPR saying that Cohen would never accept a pardon from Trump, a man he believes is corrupt... this cannot be a plea for a pardon, because insulting Trump only gets insults back, so I hope the lawyer is correct and Cohen will be the new John Dean in this drama, trading his information for better treatment.

An affidavit filed Tuesday says the 20-year-old (Mollie) Tibbetts was running on July 18 in a rural area near Brooklyn, in central Iowa, when a car driven by Cristhian Bahena Rivera approached her.

During questioning Monday, Rivera acknowledged making contact with Tibbetts, first by pursuing her in his car and then getting out and running beside her.

Rivera told investigators he became angry when Tibbetts showed a cell phone and threatened to call police.  He says he panicked and then "blocked" his memory.  He says he does not recall what happened but found an earpiece from headphones in his lap and realized he'd put Tibbetts' in his trunk.

He opened the trunk and noticed blood on the side of her head.

The affidavit says he carried Tibbetts' body to a cornfield and covered her with corn stalks.  When he was questioned by authorities, he led investigators to the site.

Rivera has been charged with first-degree murder.
