SHE may have retired from the beauty pageant circuit but Eden Wood continues to court controversy with her latest career move into modelling.

The six-year-old American, whose no-show at a Melbourne child beauty pageant caused an uproar in July, made her catwalk debut at this week's New York Fashion Week. Modelling for children's footwear brand Cicciabella, the spray-tanned child was described as gyrating provocatively in hot pants and a crop top after removing her denim vest.

But the event's host, Real Housewives star Kelly Bensimon, defended Eden's performance.

''That wasn't stripping,'' she told news website The Daily Beast. ''That was just her having a little fun, girly moment. If she was really doing something, I would have literally moved her into doing something else. I have rules.''

Eden was modelling boots from a range called Cowgirl Riders. It was her first fashion endorsement. She retired from pageantry earlier this year after making her name on the TV series Toddlers & Tiaras and winning more than 300 trophies.

Her mother, Mickie Wood, has declared her hope to build an empire around Eden's personal brand.
