In Hieronymus Bosch's fantastical painting Garden of Earthly Delights there is musical notation displayed on the butt of one of the figures in hell. Wanna hear what 15th Century butt music sounds like? I knew you did.

I really like the paintings of Hieronymus Bosch. I did see some of his stuff in the originals in a museum in Venice. That is another story.

But this music? I kind of like it. I would never call it hellacious.

Personally, though, when I saw the term "butt music" I was expecting something more like this:



The instrument being played by the musician on the right is a 'sackbutt', the Renaissance/Baroque-era ancestor of the modern trombone.  The name itself is believed to derive from either the Middle French sacquer (to pull) and bouter (to push) or the Spanish sacar (to draw or pull) and bucha (a tube or pipe).

I was mildly surprised at seeing the drummer playing the maraca by sticking it in his sock of his off-foot to keep the rhythm.  I didn't think drummers had a free foot like that, as most drum setups I've seen have the drummer usually controlling a kick bass with one foot and a high-hat cymbal with the other.  But I suppose, since he was using brushes on the drums, he was just a rhythm background rather than providing a driving beat or power drum accompaniment.

No hi-hat in that set-up. Wouldn't have been out of place, but the maraca provides a similar function with more subtlety, the floor tom and snare being dampened already and, as you note, the drummer using brushes. What fascinates me is the electric guitar in the clip; what *is* that thing?

I always wanted one of those stick basses back in 70s/80s, could never afford it. Eventually settled on a brand new Gibson Victory, which played great but weighed about a million pounds.
