Rehabilitation:

Some can, others not so much.
DUBLIN — An inmate at Alameda County’s Santa Rita jail died violently Tuesday morning, and authorities suspect his cellmate in the death, a Sheriff’s Office spokesman said.

Deputies making their normal rounds discovered the inmate dead around 8:50 a.m., spokesman Sgt. Ray Kelly said. Authorities did not identify him immediately, pending notification of his family, but said he was a 56-year-old Asian male in custody since January on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon in Union City.

He was awaiting a transfer to the Napa County Jail.

The suspect is a 73-year-old Asian male [I suppose it might be a tad late for rehabilitation?] taken into custody last Thursday, but authorities not identify him. Deputies subdued him after a struggle and put him in an isolation cell away from the rest of the jail population, Kelly said. He will be kept there indefinitely.

Authorities do not believe the killing was racially motivated or gang-related, Kelly said. No weapons were used, and authorities believe the victim was either strangled or beaten to death.

The killing happened in the jail’s behavior health housing unit, a maximum security part of the jail that houses inmates with mental illness and other behavioral issues, Kelly said. An early investigation showed the two inmates had a fight, he said.

“It was a horrific scene,” Kelly said. “The thing about killings in a jail cell is that it is contained, so nothing is going to contaminate it. It’s really a confined, controlled crime scene that’s left. The death of any person in this matter is difficult, and this will be treated like any other homicide would be treated.”

The suspect will receive a mental healthy evaluation before the Alameda County District Attorney’s Office decides the charges, Kelly said.

Video did not capture the killing. Kelly said deputies did not activate their body cameras before the incident and that cameras are not in cells, because of inmate privacy.

Kelly said the killing is the first at the jail since 2008, and that there have been only five since the facility opened in 1989.

The jail’s population on Tuesday was 2,129, Kelly said. The jail is the sixth-largest in the country.

It's the mental health unit with two likely undiagnosed and wrongly treated mentally ill inmates, not exactly a great illustration of the absence of rehabilitative success in our system.

And one thing wrong with our system is how badly it addresses rehabilitative objectives. Norways' system is much better and success of incarcerated upon release much higher, far lower recidivism rate.

Wasn't Norway the country in which some wacko killed 70+ people?

Rehab?

Mental Illness?

Or just having a bad day?

So one mass killer with no prior involvement in the criminal justice system negates all the positive statistics about Norway's rehabilitative prison system?

There is a lot of info online about Tex in prison.

Being a Prison Chaplin he had access to things not available to other inmates.

Feel free to find them on your own.
Dales--you're the one who made the statement that case from his ministry bought him many privileges, and that is what I asked you about. if your answer is "look it up yourself", fine.

BSG--I agree; by that reasoning, our recidivism rate shows that the prison system is a complete and utter failure on all accounts.

BSG.......I was only posting a tongue-in-cheek response. I've been to Norway and the people were very kind and understanding, a society that is one that should be emulated (to a limited degree).

BigRR.........Didn't mean to be snippy. I recall reading an expose on Tex Watson's ministry somewhere, but I'll be hanged if I recall where it was.

"Abounding Love Ministries" is the name.

Happy trails to both youse guys! :ok

I didn't think you were "snippy"; maybe if I ever do get a chance I will look up his ministry. And FWIW, if he has indeed changed and has done some good for others, all the better IMHO. It doesn't excuse what he did, but it shows that something positive can come from being incarcerated (which is why I don't believe in the throw the key away and keep 'em in solitary for any but the most dangerous people). People can and do turn their lives around, even in prison.

And FWIW, I don't think this automatically means he should be released, just that his case should be decided using the same standards as any other similarly situated prisoner, and his parole eligibility should not be denied because he was associated with a sensational case.

bobby's not getting out anytime soon, either............

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — California officials said Friday that they have again denied parole for a follower of cult leader Charles Manson who is serving a life sentence for a murder he committed 47 years ago.

Parole officials decided that Robert Beausoleil, 68, should remain in prison for the 1969 death of musician Gary Hinman. He can seek parole again in three years, said board spokesman Luis Patino.

Beausoleil was an aspiring musician and actor before he joined the Manson family, and he has written and recorded music while in prison.

He originally was sentenced to die, but his sentence was commuted to life in prison when the California Supreme Court ruled the death penalty unconstitutional in 1972.

He was in jail when other Manson followers killed actress Sharon Tate and four others, then murdered grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife Rosemary.

"There's absolutely no doubt in my mind, if released, Bobby will be just a model citizen. I think he's a very insightful and introspective person, and there is nothing about him that is dangerous," said his attorney, Jason Campbell.

Beausoleil had been denied parole 17 times previously.

"Thank God," Hinman's cousin, Kay Martley, said of the latest parole decision.

"He killed, murdered my cousin and it was gruesome. Three days they kept him and tortured him," she said. "All of this just comes back, even after 47 years."

Beausoleil was denied parole in part because he has been recording music for sale without the permission of California authorities, said Martley and Debra Tate, Sharon Tate's sister.

He previously had permission from Oregon authorities, where he had been serving his sentence until last year, they said. Patino and Campbell said they couldn't comment.

"If he can't play by the rules in place within prison, how can he play in a free society?" said Tate.

Beausoleil was transferred in 1994 to the Oregon State Penitentiary in Salem at his request, after he married a woman from Oregon while in prison and later fathered four children. He was transferred last year to the California Medical Facility in Vacaville, southeast of Sacramento, after his wife died and he had a disciplinary infraction at the Oregon prison.

Martley fears that officials may decide to parole Beausoleil next time because of his young age when he committed the crime, and because he elderly now.

In January, Gov. Jerry Brown reversed the parole board and blocked the release of Bruce Davis, 74, who was convicted in the slayings of Hinman and stuntman Donald "Shorty" Shea. In July, Brown blocked the release of Leslie Van Houten, 67, who is serving a life sentence for the LaBianca killings.

Ex-Charles Manson follower Patricia Krenwinkel seeks parole 47 years after killings

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Patricia Krenwinkel, once a devout follower of cult killer Charles Manson and now the longest-serving female inmate in California, appeared again Thursday before a parole board - 47 years after she helped kill pregnant actress Sharon Tate and six other people.

Krenwinkel, 69, has been denied parole 13 times since her conviction in the 1969 slayings.

She acknowledged during her trial that she chased down and repeatedly stabbed Abigail Ann Folger, the 26-year-old heiress of a coffee fortune, at Tate’s home and helped kill grocer Leno LaBianca and his wife, Rosemary, the following night.

Los Angeles County prosecutors say Krenwinkel carved the word “war” into Leno LaBianca’s stomach, then wrote “Helter Skelter” in blood on the couple’s refrigerator.

Krenwinkel’s attorney, Keith Wattley, successfully petitioned the state to hold the hearing a year early at the California Institution for Women, about 40 miles east of Los Angeles, where Krenwinkel is imprisoned.

“Ms. Krenwinkel is fully aware of the difficulty she faces,” Wattley told The Associated Press in an email. “But California law officially recognizes a person’s capacity to change and to address the factors that contributed to their previous behavior so that they can safely be paroled.”

Krenwinkel contended at her previous parole hearing in 2011 that she is a changed woman. She has a clean disciplinary record, earned a bachelor’s degree behind bars, taught illiterate inmates to read and trained service dogs for disabled people.

Sharon Tate’s sister, Debra Tate, said before Thursday’s hearing that killers such as Krenwinkel cannot be rehabilitated.

“She was a very prolific killer,” Debra Tate said recently. “They may behave well in a controlled environment, but we cannot trust that, given the pressures of life, that they will be able to remain straight” outside prison.

Krenwinkel was a 19-year-old secretary when she met Manson at a party. She testified at her previous parole hearing that she left everything behind three days later to pursue what she believed was a budding romance with him.

She wept and apologized, saying she became a “monster” after she met Manson.

“I committed myself fully to him. I committed myself to the act of murder,” she said then. “I was willing to sacrifice others’ lives for my own.”

Prosecutors say the slayings were an attempt to ignite a race war after which Manson and his followers would rise from the rubble to rule the world.

Krenwinkel was initially sentenced to death, but the California Supreme Court invalidated the death penalty in 1972. If the parole panel recommends release, Gov. Jerry Brown could still block it.

Earlier this year, the Democratic governor overturned recommendations to free Manson followers Leslie Van Houten, 67, and Bruce Davis, 74.

Krenwinkel became the state’s longest-serving female inmate when fellow Manson follower Susan Atkins died of cancer in prison in 2009.

Anthony DiMaria, the nephew of victim Thomas Jay Sebring, said Krenwinkel’s age and long stint in prison should have no bearing on the parole board decision.

DiMaria noted that Krenwinkel has lived a long time but denied that opportunity to her victims.

I just noticed the date this thread began. There was a comment about the 'Trump is Serious' thread as the longest (most pages) ever.

This thread started just over 3 years ago. What is the record for longest time?

Mass murderer Charles Manson reportedly hospitalized

By Michael Bodley

Updated 6:18 pm, Tuesday, January 3, 2017

Convicted mass murderer Charles Manson was still alive Tuesday evening following earlier reports of his hospitalization, according to the state’s corrections department.

The Los Angeles Times reported that Manson was taken from the Central Valley Prison where he’s been incarcerated to a hospital for an unknown medical issue, citing two anonymous sources.

“He’s alive,” said Krissi Khokhobashvili, a spokeswoman for the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation. “That’s all we can confirm.”

Citing prison regulations prohibiting disclosing information about the location of inmates and federal privacy laws, Khokhobashvili declined to confirm the reports. She did say that Manson was still assigned to Corcoran State Prison, which is in Kings County, about halfway between Fresno and Bakersfield.

Inmates may be removed from California prisons for outside treatment for a “multitude of reasons,” Khokhobashvili said.

Manson, 82, has been incarcerated following his 1969 arrest and later conviction for carrying out with his followers, the so-called Manson family, a series of seven murders he believed would incite a race war around Los Angeles. That included the slaying of pregnant actress Sharon Tate.

Manson has notched more than 100 rules violations on his record, including possession of a cell phone and a weapon, as well as assault and threatening California correctional staff, while in prison, Khokhobashvili said.

Just last week, a state parole board delayed their decision on the release of Patricia Krenwinkel, an accomplice of Manson who is the longest-serving female inmate in California. Manson himself, who has shown no remorse for his role in the killings, has been denied parole 12 times.

His next parole hearing is scheduled for 2027.[that's if the bugger is still alive] 8-)

2017 just isn't trying hard enough!
For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

Pence is a worse president than Trump. He is more ideologically devoted to policies which make women into breeding farm animals.
