Norway: The 'knitathon' will be televised

Norwegian TV is to broadcast a live knitting contest for hours on end.

The show, during which competitors will attempt to break the world record for producing a sweater - from the shearing of the sheep to the final stitch - airs minute-by-minute on 1 November. Several attempts to beat the Australian record of 4 hours 51 minutes have failed, programme producer Lise-May Spissoy told NRK TV's website. But she is enthusiastic about the Norwegian bid: "We've already earmarked the lamb for shearing, and are putting together the team of eight record-breakers - one will shear, while the rest spin and knit as fast as they can."

The television studio in Hordaland County has a month to prepare for National Knitting Night, which casts off on the flagship NRK1 channel before switching to NRK2. The network hopes it will be another hit for Norway's "Slow TV" phenomenon, which attracts record viewers to unedited fjord-by-fjord boat journeys and tree-felling. As with these programmes, Knitting Night will encourage viewers to join the party via social media.

OTOH, if you fall asleep and then awaken 5 hours later is it really that much different from falling asleep and then awakening 5 days later?

In a similar vein, I was extremely gratified to tune into The President's Cup (golf) the past few days. While I am an enthusiastic golfer myself, programs like this are a wonderful sleep aid. I find that I can tune in, and within 2 or 3 minutes be sound asleep, then wake up 30 minutes later, fully refreshed. Then I turn off the tube and go about my business.

The golfers seem to enjoy this competition immensely, as it is the only chance they get to play as part of a "team." But for viewers, it is uniquely boring.

I'm actually thinking of using this technique next time I fly across the pond, since the normal itinerary requires that I go to sleep around 9:30 and wake up at 3am (body time), fully refreshed and ready to start a work day in Europe.

I'm sure the America's Cup could be just as stimulating.

Then you haven't watched it in its latest iteration -- 72 foot cats, racing at over 30 knots upwind, 40 downwind, and races were done in about 25 minutes or less (unless the wind died, and then they were subject to a 40 minute limit). They were pretty damn exciting, actually.
