Plans for a new stadium have gone viral thanks to its resemblance to female genitalia.
Following its winning bid to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Quatar released plans this week to erect the new Al Wakrah sports stadium — and many are saying it resembles a vagina.
The architect, AECOM, posted a short video animation of the design for the stadium on Saturday, which was said to pull inspiration from a local fishing boat — the Arabian dhow. However, the video posted online has immediately gone viral for the stadium's singular design. The 45,000-capacity stadium is part of Qatar’s plans to host the hugely popular soccer tournament; one of six new stadiums to be constructed for one of the most popular sporting events in the world. The climate-controlled structure will be built 12 miles south of the capital city of Doha.
“The vision set by the Qatar 2022 Supreme Committee is one that embraces the cultural heritage of the host city and the adjacent historical Qatari settlement of Al Wukair,” AECOM said in a press release. “Incorporating this identity will be a crucial part of the stadium design and enhancing the fan experience.”
AECOM states that the stadium is being erected in a city with a “rich cultural heritage evidenced by its traditional Islamic architecture, historical buildings, distinctive mosques and archaeological sites." Interestingly enough, the lead architect was in fact, Zaha Hadid, an Iraqi-born woman.
If that's what they look like, I think I'll stick with what I know.

The female architect behind designs for the new Al-Wakrah sports stadium has said critics who compared her plans to female genitalia are 'really embarrassing.'
Zaha Hadid has hit back against claims her designs for the stadium, which will host the 2022 FIFA World Cup, resemble a woman's private parts insisting they were inspired by an ancient dhow boat.
Iraqi-born Hadid, who is considered one of the world's best female architects, also suggested the plans would not have faced the same criticism if they were designed by a man.
'It's really embarrassing they come up with nonsense stuff like this.
'What are they saying? Everything with a hole in it is a vagina? That's ridiculous,' she told Time.
Hadid, who won the prestigious Pritzker Architecture Prize in 2004 added 'if a guy had done this project' there wouldn't have been the same level of criticism.
The striking design is meant to resemble an ancient dhow boat that Qataris traditionally used for pearl diving.
But when plans were released for a new 45,000-capacity stadium to host the 2022 FIFA World Cup the first reaction was something different entirely.
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
Well, now you see her face... she has a valid point. Maybe it wasn't that other more private place that inspired the shape of the stadium...
