Sex-change Manning sues for hormone shots

A YEAR after being sentenced to 35 years in prison for staging the biggest leak of confidential government documents in US history — more than 700 000 — former soldier Chelsea Manning is suing the military and wants a sexchange operation.

In an 180-page complaint filed this week, former US Army intelligence analyst Bradley Manning, who now uses the name Chelsea Elizabeth Manning, alleged that he had been “denied access to medically necessary treatment for her gender dysphoria.”
Since being imprisoned on August 21 2013, he has sought hormone treatment, saying he feels like a woman in a man’s body.

With the support of the American Civil Liberties Union, Manning sued Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel and the Pentagon, alleging that his US constitutional right — not to be subjected to cruel and unusual treatment — was being violated.

“The government continues to deny Ms Manning’s access to necessary medical treatment for gender dysphoria, without which she will continue to suffer severe psychological harm,” said Chase Strangio, an ACLU attorney and co-counsel for Manning
