First anniversary of Mandela's death

Post by MajGenl.Meade »

It seems appropriate to commemorate a truly great statesman (and no saint) this way:

You mean Zapiro, the Jewish South African cartoonist (Jonathan Shapiro) is a racist? Observe that he depicts all of the white Boer prime ministers and/or state presidents (perhaps Malan, Vorster, Botha, and certainly de Klerk) as simian, although slightly less so by the time de Klerk was State President.

Mandela - a black man - is shown as the first and only true homo sapiens in this depiction of the ascent of man. The subsequent presidents - Mbeke and Zuma - have been retrograde; a return to the pre-1994 condition.

This cartoon is not about race but about politics, ideals and the corruption of power. It is a caricature of the sad decline of leadership in SA since Mandela.

It is an embarrassment that rubato views it only through some lens of his own which equates black people with inferior abilities.

Funny stance for an Ethiopian to take?
“If you trust in yourself, and believe in your dreams, and follow your star. . . you'll still get beaten by people who spent their time working hard and learning things and weren't so lazy.”
