RIP George Kennedy

Post by Gob »

US actor George Kennedy, who starred in movies including Cool Hand Luke and the Naked Gun series, has died at the age of 91, his grandson has announced.

Cory Schenkel said his grandfather died on Sunday morning in the city of Boise, Idaho, celebrity news website TMZ reported.

Kennedy won an Oscar in 1968 for Best Supporting Actor in Cool Hand Luke.

As well as the Naked Gun comedies, he also made memorable appearances in Earthquake and Airport 1975.

Mr Schenkel, quoted by TMZ, said the veteran actor had been in poor health since the death of his wife, Joan, more than a year ago, and had been in a hospice for the past month.

Kennedy was born in 1924 in New York where his father worked as a musician and his mother was a dancer.

He served with the US infantry during World War Two, winning several decorations, and in the 1950s he worked for Armed Forces Radio and Television before moving to Hollywood.

The 6ft 4in actor quickly became well known for playing tough-guy characters.

Kennedy's final film role was in The Gambler in 2014, TMZ added.
Kennedy as Bowman, Clint Eastwood as Hemlock.

Ben Bowman: Wanna Beer?
Jonathan Hemlock: You gonna call room service?
Ben Bowman: We got beer.
Jonathan Hemlock: If you hauled beer up this rock you're insane!
Ben Bowman: I may be insane, but I'm not stupid. I didn't carry it, you did! It's in your pack.
Jonathan Hemlock: Christ, I ought'a throw you off this pillar! Besides, it's warm.
Ben Bowman: Oh I'm sorry, I thought you'd draw the line on haulin' ice.

Name the movie, no googling.

Farewell, George Kennedy.
I remember you best as Joe Patroni from the original "Airport" film.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Interesting the way Kennedy got into show business...

He was given his start by Phil Silvers...

Kennedy had been assigned by the army to work as a technical adviser to The Phil Silvers (Sgt. Bilko) Show. Silvers took a liking to him and asked him if he'd like to do some bit performing on camera...

He played "MP Sgt. Kennedy" in 14 episodes between 1956 and 1959 and went on to work non-stop in film and television for the next 55 years...

Loved him in Cool Hand Luke -- "my boy Luke", as well as the straight man in the Naked Gun silliness.

A fun film, from a very funny book.

The climbing scenes in the movie are fantastic.

Unfortunately;
A number of accidents occurred during filming. A 27-year-old Scottish climber, David Knowles, who was a body double and photographer, was killed during a rock fall, and Hoover narrowly escaped with his life. Eastwood almost abandoned the project but proceeded because he did not want Knowles to have died in vain. Eastwood insisted on doing all his own climbing and stunts. Stanley also fell but survived and used a wheelchair for some time. Stanley, who completed filming under pressure from Eastwood, blamed Eastwood for the accident because of lack of preparation, describing him as a director and actor as a "very impatient man who doesn't really plan his pictures or do any homework. He figures he can go right in and sail through these things."

I didn't know that either. I did read Robert Ludlum's homage to Mary Shelley: The Igor Sanction

For Christianity, by identifying truth with faith, must teach-and, properly understood, does teach-that any interference with the truth is immoral. A Christian with faith has nothing to fear from the facts

OFFS! :D
The Eiger Sanction is a 1972 thriller novel by Trevanian, the pen name of Rodney William Whitaker. The story is about a classical art professor and collector who doubles as a professional assassin, and who is coerced out of retirement to avenge the murder of an old friend. The novel was made into a film directed by and starring Clint Eastwood in 1975. Whitaker wrote a sequel entitled The Loo Sanction.
