Geezerdom

Post by MajGenl.Meade »

OK, I've reached the point in life where I'm judged by the public to be generally (not General Lee) harmless. These days I can say pretty much almost anything to random persons - especially waitresses, waiters, check-out ladies and so on. They just think I'm a sweet old eccentric. (@w, pull your fingers out of your throat immediately). 8-)

But there's probably a border line that shouldn't be crossed; a limit to what is cutely amusing before becoming offensive. :?

I'd like to ask for input - board wisdom, if you will - as what should never be said to.... well, let's take the case of a female servitor in a Subway. There must be some things that should never pass my lips (yes, cupcakes, gin, we get it). So, what should I not say? ;)

Rent "Kotch" and "Harry and Tonto". Then "Fun with Dick and Jane" (Jane Fonda, not the later version).

Maybe watch "Grace and Frankie".

Then smoke some pot and think about the friendly and helpful advice all the people in your immediate social circle would benefit from and give it to 'em. As long as it comes from a place of love it's cool.

Then smoke some more pot.

Aum.

Don't ever say, "If I were a lot younger, I'd be trying to get into your pants".

I haven't quite reached that stage, (I'm still taken seriously when I speak to people in those situations 8-) ) but I have someone in my life who definitely has reached that stage , so I know exactly what you're talking about....

My Mother-in-Law's boyfriend...

He's a 78 year old German guy, he came here shortly after "The War" , he still drives, and he's loaded with energy...

(Much like the Queen Mum...they travel all the time...)

And he's a lovely person and he and I get along well...

But he loves to play the "little old eccentric man" card...

Every couple of months he and I go out dinner together by ourselves, (I've explained to him that might make it look like he's out with his younger gay lover.. 8-) ) to a restaurant in Marin that he's fond of, and then to an Irish pub next door...

And this guy flirts with every woman in the place...(the restaurant and the bar)

To the point that he's able to get young women sitting over at other tables with their SOs (not just waitresses; customers) to come and sit on his lap...

So I said, " You know Hans, if I acted the way you do, I'd get beat up in the parking lot by an irate boyfriend"...

To which he replied, "Jimmy, that's one the nice things about being a cute little old man...nobody feels threatened.." 8-)

I've got to the point where I'm "non threatening" to female coworkers at least. It can be somewhat distracting when they stretch and bend in manners that while perfectly natural are somewhat indiscreet in mixed company. In the interest of keeping thing running smoothly I don't mention it and try not to stare.
Okay... There's all kinds of things wrong with what you just said.

It's a bit sad when Joe's the only one who "got" it

Whddayuh mean? I have been a Geezer In Training for 10 years now. I want to be prepared and ready to get full enjoyment out of that golden time of life where you can say (almost) anything to anyone and get away with it. A friend is a WWII vet who lives in Morro bay and before is death ran into Jack La Lanne socially on a regular basis. LaLanne would tell women he didn't know "you look great, you must be getting a lot of sex".

Something to look forward to.

Rent "Kotch" though. It is dead center on target for your question.

Be kind and civil. Don't say anything that would make your mother blush or your daughter to be embarassed.
Being old is no excuse for bad manners.

Judging from your avatar Crackpot, staring, and even pointing, is a way of life.
I figure I'll quit staring when they close the lid, or maybe a few days before. Beautiful women were put on this earth for a reason back in the olden days when it was a good idea to be fruitful and multiply. Thankfully some of them are still around. As long as I don't get caught by the object of my staring (or Mrs Mc, whom I still stare at often) it's OK.
A friend of Doc's, one of only two B-29 bombers still flying.

It doesn't matter where you get your appetite, as long as you go home for dinner.
