I think Lightfoot's lyrics are as close to what happened compared with other theories. I once heard that a rare phenomena called a "hole in the water" could have caused the sinking. A portion of the lake bed crumbles inward/downward and a rush of water fills the void. At that moment the EF runs over it and a portion of the hull , now unsupported by water, distorts and sustains major crack damage. Watertight hatches and doors couldn't be sealed fast enough. And the rest is history.

The wreckage was eventually located and determined it broke in half -- possibly very near the surface in 325 ft. deep waters.

“In a world whose absurdity appears to be so impenetrable, we simply must reach a greater degree of understanding among us, a greater sincerity.”
