Trump and the 'Overton Window'

Post by Bicycle Bill »

How Trump & Company skewed our perspective of 'normal' in a little less than two years.

Yes, I suppose I could agree with you ... but then we'd both be wrong, wouldn't we?

Sadly, I think that is what the republicans have been doing for years--shifting the "center" further and further to the right. What many now call "moderate" would have been called solidly conservative 30 years ago, and even what is called "liberal" (like the Clintons or Obama) would have been right of center moderate then. And the shift then stigmatizes even modest progressive proposals, which can be derided as horribly radical. Trump is just continuing and accelerating this.

As I recall when I debated in high school, the Affirmative side could define the terms, which could be a distinct tactical advantage if you took a different, but still defensible, position about the question being debated. This is what's happening here, and the press is playing along. It just shows how right Orwell was.
