Vote out the stupid, insipid, poor excuse we now have as POTUS.

America’s lead trade negotiator, Robert Lighthizer, had an awkward encounter with President Donald Trump in the Oval Office on Friday as he tried to calmly school him on legal terminology in front of reporters and a chuckling representative from China.


Lighthizer finally stopped trying, and instead deftly switched the term for the same document when he realized he wasn’t making any headway with the president.

It started when Trump was asked by a reporter how long “memorandums of understanding” being negotiated with China over trade disputes would last.

Trump shot back: “I don’t like MOUs because they don’t mean anything.”

Lighthizer calmly corrected the president, and turned to explain to reporters: “An MOU is a contract. It’s the way trade agreements are generally [established]. It’s an actual contract between the two parties. A memo of understanding is a binding agreement.”

He added: “It’s detailed, it covers everything. ... It’s a legal term; it’s a contract.”

“I disagree,” said a scowling Trump, causing top Chinese negotiator Vice Premier Liu He to laugh. “A memorandum of understanding is exactly that: It’s a memorandum of what our understanding is,” he said, circling his hands in the air. “How long will that take to put into a ... contract?”

In a flash, Lighthizer switched gears without breaking a sweat: “From now on we’re not using ‘memorandum of understanding’ anymore (sparking laughter from several people in the room). We’re going to use the term ‘trade agreement.’ We’ll have the same document; it’s going to be called a trade agreement. We’re never going to have an MOU again.”

“Good,” said Trump.

Now to call that a racist insult surely has some basis in someone's reality. A black man (Spike Lee) said in regard to 2020 that people need to make a moral choice. The statement itself is not racist. But a black man said it. And, evidently to one President, that fact MAKES it racist. A black man says something to which no one in their right mind can take exception, but because his skin color is different from one President's, THAT makes it a racist comment.

I think it's clear which of them is the racist.

(Not Spike - although I must say he seems to have gone loopy. Looking forward to seeing his fillum though).

I like Spike, he is what you want an artist to be. He is interesting, insightful, honest and he pisses people off. But every once in a while he slips off the rails, usually driven by ego and his propensity to choose shit-stirring over art. I saw both Black Kkklansman and Green Book and both are very good movies and both deserving of recognition but Viggo Mortensen's character was better written and more interesting and his acting was better. And Green Book was about how change can happen from the inside out as opposed to from the outside in.

When you talk about a 'lynching', might I suggest you look at the matter of Garrison Keillor?  George Orwell would be proud of the way Minnesota Public Radio cut all ties with him over merely an allegation, killing off his radio show(s) and quarantining (at least I hope they've quarantined it; I'd hate to think it has all been discarded, deleted, or otherwise obliterated) the vast amount of material he had created under their auspices over the past three or four decades.

Now when they stop showing "Space Jam" on TV and withdraw all the videos of it because R. Kelly did a song for it, or Sony or whoever deletes his discography, then you can talk to me about 'lynching' him.  Remember too that he (Kelly) was actually indicted on ten counts of sexual assault, and the last I'd heard is that he still hadn't been able to post his $100K bond or find any of his 'friends' who would be willing to do so for him.

There was a thorough investigation done of Garrison Keillor and the findings more than justified MPR’s decision to sever ties with him. Remember, he’s not losing his liberty in the criminal system - he’s losing a part time job. As a reminder, he’s already left PHC before all this happened, so he was only yanked from Writer’s Almanac.

For the record, I adored Keillor. The vast majority of my Saturday afternoons (or Sunday, if I listened to the repeat instead) for nearly two decades were spent listening to Prairie Home Companion, and I loved hearing The Writer’s Almanac every morning. I’ve read all his books and loved the movie and I own a special boxed set DVD/CD of movie and some show episodes that I’m grateful to have now that it’s not so readily accessible. I’m heartbroken by the revelation that yet another man whose work I deeply admired turns out to be a creepy jerk instead of a truly decent person.

Truly decent people are rarer than they ought to be.

liberty, what a ridiculous and blatantly false statement! I'd be very happy to discuss with you ALL DAY LONG the many justified use of deadly force cases that happen in the US every year.

On the other hand, I think we should also spend some time - maybe the rest of that week - talking about the many UNjustified use of deadly force cases, many of which involve white victims, asian victims, native american victims, hispanic victims, etc. The police aren't just killing black people - they just kill more black people than the demographics would justify, which tends to show racial bias.

But make no mistake, the police are fucking up all over and in interaction with all races - and they're shooting people's dogs indiscriminately, too. All kinds of dogs, not just pitbulls - they're blowing away chihuahuas for barking the wrong way during a warrant search or whatever.

Our police are trigger happy and way too militarized, with an US v THEM mentality that is incongruent with protecting and serving. We need massive reform in community policing if the people are going to trust the police and the police are going to have the support of the communities who pay them and deserve their service.

Didn’t they say that when they recently shot an innocent black man to death who was among other patrons running from a shooting in a mall? I think they also said that when they showed up and shot and killed a black security guard/bouncer who was subduing a shooter and saving the lives of dozens of bar patrons in the process. ‘Oops! Collateral damage!’ (Collateral to our race-biased training and culture, that is.)

Somehow I can find value the stories of Canterbury Tales without knowing any of the details or even the generalities of the life of the author. Same with the stories of Lee Child or Zenna Henderson.
