MEANWHILE !

Post by Burning Petard »

Late Night With Steven Colbert sometimes has a news segment called "meanwhile" that gives comment on things you might have missed during all the important stuff we must worry about like who has set foot on the Korean DMZ lately or where Trump is parking his tank sized ego today.

I could have posted it in any one of several other topics here, but I sort of randomly put in The Arts. I could get mad about this but it is one more milestone in the march of our American Way Of Life.

I saw that today and was sad; I actually subscribed to MAD a year or so ago so I could get a free hardcover compilation of the best of MAD, which I’m now very glad of. To be honest I haven’t really read the magazine when it arrives, but I’ve got a small stack of them to look at. I used to love MAD as a preteen and teenager, but I guess it’s the way of all things.

I will be 49 later this year, and it feels like much of the world I once knew is gone. Certainly most of the people I’ve ever been closest to are gone, and the way the world works has changed really profoundly and I’ve finally got to the point of admitting I don’t care for it all that much. I would not be sad if I woke up tomorrow to 1980s technology; yes I’ve thought of the option of just taking my own tech use down to those levels, but I’m not sure who else I’d find there, if anyone.

I do think our modern world is more and more alienating.
For me, it is far better to grasp the Universe as it really is than to persist in delusion, however satisfying and reassuring.
