Nothing to Worry About Here

I (and 2098 others) posted a comment on this piece when it appeared a week ago:

There is little I disagree with in this piece except the title: How Scientists Got Climate Change So Wrong. Trump and those who "think" like him will not look past that headline and will repeat it in triumph: "Look, even the failing NY Times agrees that climate science is all wrong!"

Sadly you are very correct.

eta: A quirky highlight of my day, this ’small world’ moment when I learn that a comment I admired on a NYT article happened to have been made by an individual whose thoughts I am privy to on a regular basis in this forum. And to remind, despite a recent dustup I do mostly look upon your posts with my head nodding. One of the reasons I’m currently budgeting for $8/mo. digital access to the NYT is not only to read the fine reporting, but to read the comments sections which are generally a great source of comfort to me in a world gone mad with Trumpism/idiocracy.

So, thank you. :ok

Nothing to Worry About Here

Post by RayThom »

With so many backdated newspapers on my coffee table I finally finished reading this article just last night.

I am one of the 17% who "correctly understand that almost all climate change scientists think global warming is happening." Scary stuff.

Head for the hills, and hope they're not on fire. We're doomed.

Every generation has its crisis, its problem to solve. They are not chosen and many of them threaten our existence. We will suffer from climate change but in the end we will be successful.

Smallpox, polio and Spanish flu were bad too. And on a smaller scale the Irish potato famine was pretty bad.

The Black Death doesn’t get a mention? It only wiped out about 40% of the population.

The difference between every other challenge ever faced by humankind and the coming tidal wave of climate change is that all those other challenges happened in a world habitable by humankind. The likely scenarios now acknowledged by mainstream science create a world in the next hundred years +/- that most probably cannot sustain humankind at anything but the smallest scale.

Earth will survive, no question. To suggest that humankind will certainly survive is to be entirely naive about the science of AGW/CC as currently understood. 11,000+ scientists across the globe have just sounded the crisis alarms - and NOTHING IS CHANGING.

I wouldn’t bet my next measly paycheck on the long term survival of humankind.
