Desmond Tutu visits Grace Cathedral

Nothing is hopeless, from tyranny in Africa to traffic in the Bay Area, apartheid fighter and Nobel laureate Desmond Tutu told an enraptured, standing-room-only crowd in San Francisco on Sunday.

"We are all agents of transfiguration," Tutu told the congregation at Grace Cathedral during its Sunday morning service. "Go forth and transform your personal relationships, your community, your world, so it becomes hospitable to joy, to justice, to freedom, to peace."

The sermon culminated a quiet, brief visit for Tutu, who was invited to San Francisco by Grace Cathedral's dean, the Rev. Jane Shaw.

The former Anglican archbishop of Cape Town announced his retirement from public life in October as he turned 79. But in a four-day trip, the South African civil rights hero also spoke at a Grace Cathedral fundraiser and at its preschool, as well as at Modesto Junior College.

At Sunday's service, the crowd of more than 1,000 was transfixed by the soft-spoken, genial Episcopal priest.

"I love the way he connected personal transformation with the transformation of social institutions that cause problems around the world," said Ken Prola, a San Francisco teacher.
